Eric Atkinson, currently Associate Vice President for Student Affairs, has been named the next Dean of Students at the University of Georgia.
As part of ongoing efforts to enhance the student experience on campus, UGA is launching Dawg Source, a one-stop hybrid service model that provides resources to support students from pre-enrollment through graduation in person and online.
James Stinson IV saw a disconnect between well-being resources and black male students on campus. Even though UGA has many well-being programs, Stinson, a fourth-year majoring in social work from Ellenwood, Georgia, and president of Black Male Leadership Society (BMLS) saw an opportunity for a student-driven avenue to connect black male students with well-being and belonging resources on campus. Working with Student Care and Outreach (SCO), Multicultural Services and Programs (MSP), and BMLS, Stinson launched UGA’s first Barbershop Talk last February 2023.
As students gathered around the large mahogany table, leaning in to listen to Dr. Michelle Garfield Cook, one saw the dictionary definition of captivation. Dr. Cook, Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion and Strategic University Initiatives, met on Wednesday, March 23rd with 14 students. The Office of the Dean of Students hosts “Gettin’ Down with the Dean” events where students and a guest speaker meet under different roofs across campus to listen and absorb thoughtful stories found right here in our Athens campus community. To say students were thoughtfully absorbing Dr. Cook’s words is mildly underselling her profound impact.
Intramural Sports gives literally everyone the opportunity to play – even faculty, staff, and their spouses. Participants are able to form their own team and play with friends or sign up as a free agent and make some new ones. Dozens of sports are offered each semester. The Asian American Student Association at UGA was named “Organization of the Year” during the 21st annual H. Gordon and Francis S. Davis Student Organization Achievement and Recognition Awards, given out April 12 at the Tate Student Center. The SOAR Awards celebrate the accomplishments of student organizations at the University of Georgia.
