Let’s learn more about Dana!

Are you from Georgia? If not, where are you from?

    • I am originally from Greenville, North Carolina, but grew up primarily in Williamsburg, VA which is where I call home

How long have you worked at UGA?

    • I have worked at UGA since August 2023
      • Graduate Assistant for Fitness & Wellness with Recreational Sports
      • I am in the College Student Affairs Administration master’s program and will graduate in May 2025

What does a “day in the life” look like for you at work?

    • Every day is different, which is something I really love about working in campus recreation. I get to spend a lot of time away from my desk either working with students or working on a project which I enjoy because it keeps me energized and makes every day feel like a different adventure!

What are three things you love most about your job?

    • Mentoring – A part of my role is mentoring and training newly hired group fitness instructors. One of my favorite things about working in the fitness space is getting to see new instructors gain confidence in themselves and their capabilities to lead a class. It fills my cup to watch student’s preserver and grow into confident and leaders.
    • Student Development – I love being in a position where I get to expose students to development opportunities. One of my favorites is the Southeast Fitness Collegiate Expo, an annual conference centered around students who work in fitness within collegiate recreation. Last year we took a group of students with us to the conference and plan to do the same this year!
    • Flexibility – My job provides a lot of flexibility, which is very much appreciated, especially as a graduate student! I work with an awesome pro staff team at Ramsey (shoutout Melissa Murry and Lisa Williamson) who value my input and trust me to make decisions and implement new ideas.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

    • Completing my first triathlon! This was a goal of mine since I was in high school, and I finally did my first one after graduating college in July 2022 and fell in love with the sport! I am doing my first Ironman 70.3 triathlon race at the end of the month with the long-term goal to do the full Ironman distance race in 2025! Making my dreams a reality!

Who do you look up to/ admire?

    • My mom and dad – they are both so caring, resilient, and supportive. I am so grateful to have two amazing role models in my life who believe in me and empower me to be the best version of myself

What are your hobbies or favorite things to do for fun?

    • Reading & exercising are my main hobbies. I love to stay active in many ways, my current favorites are swimming, biking, running, and walking. I also love romance books, two of my favorites are People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry and Meet Me at the Lake by Carley Fortune!

What might be some ways that staff could collaborate or partner with you?

    • Outreaches! The fitness & wellness department does outreach group fitness classes or educations sessions for groups on campus! These are free for all registered student organizations and a great way to bring fitness and wellness into your day!

Anything you would like to share that you would like other staff to know about you?

    • I went to James Madison university for my undergrad and graduated in May of 2022. I started working as a group fitness instructor in my freshman year which is how I got my start in campus recreation. My senior year at JMU, I had a leadership role as an Operations Supervisor for campus rec where I worked on a team to oversee the entire facility daily operations. This job exposed me to student affairs and sparked passion in me for student affairs and higher education as a career path. Following my graduation, I spent one year in a professional internship role at UNC chapel hill working in fitness and wellness for campus recreation. This was my first professional role, and I am very grateful for the experience I had at UNC because it allowed me to learn a lot about myself as a leader and as a professional. I started at UGA at the conclusion of my internship in August of 2023 as the GA for Fitness and Wellness with Recreational Sports. I am in my second year of my Master’s program in College Student Affairs Administration (CSAA) and will graduate in May 2025. I currently also have the privilege of serving as the Georgia State Student Leader for Campus Recreation and hold an executive position for the CSAA Graduate Association as the Vice President of Operations.

Do you have a favorite quote? What is it?

    • “You don’t have to see the entire staircase, just the first step”
      • I love this quote because it reminds me that it is okay to not have everything figured out! The important thing for me is to take things one step at a time and to always enjoy the journey along the way, sometimes that is the best part of every new adventure!

What is the coolest thing you have ever done and why?

    • A fun fact about me is that I have visited every lighthouse in North Carolina (7 total!)
