Kevin Karneboge, Disability Resource Center

Kevin Karneboge

Assistant Director, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services

Commitment to Excellence Award Winner 2022-2023

Kevin’s nominator wrote the following about him: “Kevin will drive across campus in his truck to help move a colleague’s chair. He will jump in at the beginning of an incredibly hectic semester and meet with students with learning disabilities to get them set up with accommodations….His wealth of knowledge and support for deaf and hard of hearing students is ever growing and adapting. His can-do attitude is contagious and appreciated.”

Let’s learn more about Kevin:

Are you from Georgia? If not, where are you from?

  •  I was born outside of Chicago, but I grew up in the metro Atlanta area.
How long have you worked at UGA?
  •  In March, I will have worked at UGA for 30 years.

What’s your favorite UGA tradition?

  •  Actually, commencement ceremonies are my favorite tradition, especially when a student that I’ve worked with for years is graduating.  It’s a great feeling of accomplishment for both of us.

What does a “day in the life” look like for you at work?

  • There’s rarely a typical day for me.  My schedule will be dependent on what classes I’m interpreting that semester.  Classes could be at any time 8am in the morning till 9:30pm at night. It depends on the programs of study students are in and what their schedules are for the semester.  When I’m not interpreting is when I attend to the other areas of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Services. I oversee Captioned Media, Real-time Captioning, and Assistive Listening Devices.  I also work with Disability Coordinators to determine appropriate accommodation for DHH students.

What are the three things you love most about your job?

  • I do love working directly with students, especially incoming freshmen. Also, I love the variety of environments that I work in.  I’m rarely sitting behind a desk all day and I’m not out in the classroom interpreting all day either. It’s a nice balance. One of my favorite things about my job is the variety of subject matters and courses that I’m exposed to.  I’ve interpreted in core courses like English 1101 and MATH 1101 as well as upper level and graduate courses like Quantum Mechanics and Forensic Anthropology.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

  • I feel fortunate to have been involved in the planning and carrying out of the first UGA study abroad where ASL interpreters were used.  It was a six-week program in Paris, France.

What are your hobbies or favorite things to do for fun?

  • I love the outdoors (Camping, hiking, etc.) I also love playing soccer.  It’s the only sport I played growing up and I started playing again when I moved to Athens.

What might be something that you would like other staff to know about your job?

  • Most people say that interpreting must be tiring on my hands and arms.  It’s actually more taxing on my brain.  That’s often why interpreters work in a team of two for assignments longer than an hour and a half. It’s very fatiguing trying stay so focused intently for long periods of time while simultaneously interpreting into another language.  Coffee is often my sidekick.

What might be some ways that staff could collaborate or partner with you?

  • I’d love to collaborate with anyone wanting to help raise Deaf awareness around campus, especially regarding captioned media.  With digital video being so easily produced and ubiquitous, captioning is often overlooked.  This has the potential to exclude students, faculty, staff, visitors to campus and visitors to UGA websites.

What is your favorite spot on campus or in Athens?

  • North Campus

What is the coolest thing you have ever done?

  • Interpreting in Paris.  It’s one of the hardest, yet rewarding experience I’ve ever had.
