UGA Greek Life Wins Annual Blood Drive Competition against University of Texas

Each year, University of Georgia Greek Life challenges a fellow SEC institution to a friendly competition centered around lifesaving blood donations, fostering both camaraderie and community engagement. This year, UGA partnered with the University of Texas for a head-to-head blood drive event.

The department of Greek Life, in partnership with The Blood Connection, hosted the campus blood collection, inviting students to donate and support local and regional blood needs. UGA recorded 268 donors, including 223 completed donations, with 188 first-time donors and 80 returning donors. In total, UGA collected 227 pints of blood, contributing to an estimated 681 lives impacted.

The University of Texas also had a strong turnout, with 267 donors and 190 completed donations, resulting in 180 pints collected and an estimated 540 lives impacted. While the competition remained close, UGA ultimately secured the win by making the greatest overall contribution.

This annual SEC tradition underscores the meaningful difference students can make when united behind a shared cause. As part of The Blood Connection’s partnership with Piedmont Hospital, much of the blood collected in Athens has the potential to directly support patients in local healthcare facilities.

“We’re incredibly proud of all of our donors for showing up and helping us with the competition,” said Joshua Welch, director of Greek Life at the University of Georgia. “I am also really grateful for colleagues in the SEC that can rally their community around a great cause and for the work that Sara Winters, our former Program Support Specialist, did to help coordinate this year’s competition with Texas.”

What begins as a spirited rivalry ultimately reflects something deeper: two campus communities coming together to support lifesaving efforts across their regions. With UGA emerging victorious in the blood drive totals, this momentum carried over into another win for the UGA Football Team against the Texas Longhorns.
