Sisterhood and Service: The powerful impact of Sigma Delta Tau

Every year, Sigma Delta Tau hosts SDT Greek Grind, their fall philanthropy event benefitting Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA). SDT Greek Grind is a dance competition between all 20 Panhellenic sororities at the Akins Ford Arena in Downtown Athens. The theme for this year’s event is “Turn up the Grind!” Each sorority choregraphs a dance for the competition to win money for their philanthropy. Last year, Sigma Delta Tau raised more than $120,000 for PCAA.

Samantha Narissi is a third-year psychology and biology student from Long Island, New York. She serves as Vice President of Philanthropy for Sigma Delta Tau. In her role, Narissi helps plan and promote her chapter’s philanthropy events. Narissi highlighted SDT Greek Grind as one of her favorite events of the year.

“We are able to bring the entire sorority and Panhellenic community together to raise awareness and support the effort to prevent childhood abuse as well as give back to the Athens community,” she said.

SDT Greek Grind is a lively intersection of friendly competition, building community awareness for important national causes.

Narissi expressed how important local philanthropy is to Sigma Delta Tau. For their spring philanthropy event, the sorority partners with a local charity for a food-themed fundraising event called ΣΔΤ Your Heart Out. Last spring, Sigma Delta Tau served donuts from Cafe Racer at the event, where they raised more than $9,000 for the Athens Area Humane Society.

“It is so important that we are able to become more involved in the Athens community and help create a positive impact” she said.

Sigma Delta Tau is part of the Panhellenic Council in UGA Greek Life. Giving back to the community is one of many benefits of sorority philanthropy. Narissi shared the importance of philanthropy in bringing her sisterhood to life.

“I know that I can always see a familiar face around campus and be able to go to anyone and feel comfortable to be myself,” she said. “I have found so many girls with similar interests and values as me, which I am so thankful for.”

Through events like SDT Greek Grind and ΣΔΤ Your Heart Out, Sigma Delta Tau exemplifies the true spirit of sisterhood and service. By combining creativity, community involvement and a commitment to meaningful causes, the sorority not only raises significant funds for national and local organizations but also fosters deep bonds among its members. As they continue to give back and lift others up, the women of Sigma Delta Tau show that philanthropy is more than an event, it’s a way of life.
