Kaitlyn O’Keefe, University Housing
Kaitlyn O'Keefe
Assistant Director, University Housing
Here is some of what Kaitlyn’s nominators said about her:
“Unwavering strength, describes Kaitlyn perfectly. She does not buckle during adversity, instead she digs deep and finds a way to rise.”
“Kaitlyn develops trusting relationships based on mutual respect, which allows her to provide thoughtful feedback and appropriately challenge others. Staff most appreciate her willingness to offer support during difficult moments (accountability conversations, crisis situations, etc.). This approach gives staff the confidence they need to act on things they previously doubted they could do.”
“University Housing, like many departments across college campuses, faces staffing shortages. Kaitlyn stepped up to the plate and provided excellent and thoughtful leadership in this area in two ways. One, she lead staff recruitment efforts at the professional and graduate level, revising these methods to meet the expectations of a new generation of entry level staff and graduates. Kaitlyn developed new procedures for recruitment, pivoting to newer procedures over this past year when presented with more challenges in the hiring market. She revamped all of our marketing materials to personalize these efforts to each candidate. Kaitlyn looked at recruitment processes from a comprehensive approach starting with recruitment materials, to the on campus experience, and to how applicants are onboarded.”
Let’s learn a little bit more about Kaitlyn…
Are you from Georgia? I am from Georgia, born and raised in Kennesaw, GA. I’ve taken a tour of the southeast during my professional career including Tallahassee, FL, Lexington, KY, and Gainesville, FL, but I am thrilled to call Athens home again!
How long have you worked at UGA?
I have worked professionally at UGA since December 2019, and I am actually an Alum myself. I’ve been lucky enough to call Brumby Hall home since 2009, and I served as an RA from 2010-2013.
What does a “day in the life” look like for you at work?
I love that no two days are the same! Most of my time is spent providing support and guidance to my professional and student staff, working to help create a welcoming and inclusive community our students can call home, and recruiting the new cohort of graduate and professional staff that join our department each year.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
It was an honor to be recognized as the Outstanding Mid-Level Professional at the 2023 SEAHO (Southeastern Association of Housing Officers) Conference.
Who do you look up to/ admire?
I consider myself lucky to have several incredible female mentors in my life who work in housing and residence life and have helped me navigate my career. I also admire the life and work of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
What are your hobbies or favorite things to do for fun?
I am a huge reader, partial to all things Disney, and love spending time with my chocolate lab named Harper!
What is your favorite quote?
“Whatever you choose to do, leave tracks. That means don’t do it just for yourself. You will want to leave the world a little better for your having lived.” – Ruth Bader Ginsburg
What is the coolest thing you have ever done and why?
I ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon in 2018 with my sister. It was something I never thought I would be able to do, so to cross that off my bucket list was something to be proud of!
What might be some ways that staff could collaborate or partner with you?
As the Assistant Director who oversees the first year high rise communities we are always looking for engaging ways to partner with folks to provide our residents with easy access to campus resources.
Anything you would like to share that you would like other staff to know about you?
I bleed red and black and my love for UGA runs deep. I am proud to not only be a UGA Alum but to now also be a professional staff member helping shape the next generation of Bulldawgs UGA experience!
