Jeremiah Johnson named director of the Tate Student Center
Jeremiah Johnson has been named director of the Tate Student Center at the University of Georgia. Johnson previously served as director of the Hill Student Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
With 200,000 square feet of space, the Tate Student Center features meeting rooms, multiple dining options, numerous lounges and gathering spaces, administrative offices and a 12,000 square-foot multipurpose room for large scale activities and events. Nearly three million people pass through Tate’s doors each year. The Tate Student Center provides a safe and welcoming space for students through entertaining and educational programs, efficient and courteous customer service, and opportunities for students to learn and develop.
In this role, Johnson will be responsible for the operational management and supervision of the facilities, personnel, and budgets associated with the Tate Student Center. This includes direct oversight of Campus Reservations, Events and Technical Services (CRETS), Facilities, the UGA OneCard Office, and Tate Print & Copy. He will report to Associate Dean of Students Barrett Malone.
Malone expressed his excitement for Johnson to continue the legacy of the Tate Student Center as the “heart” of UGA’s campus.
“As director of a large, modern and relevant student center at UAB, Jeremiah can continue our decades-long tradition of providing a welcoming and thriving “living room” for campus,” said Malone. “We have a tradition of quality and innovation, and I look forward to seeing his leadership in creating an even more engaging student center.”
Johnson spoke to the magnitude of responsibility that student affairs programs and facilities have to provide the best learning environment possible for today’s discerning students.
“There is a lot competing for students’ attention in today’s world,” Johnson said. “Our job is to provide as many exceptional spaces and opportunities as possible to ensure students feel welcomed, supported, and at-home on their campus – especially in their student center.”
Johnson’s appointment is effective September 24.
In addition to the units previously mentioned, he will also provide direction and oversight for ticket operations and facilities management for other buildings, including Memorial Hall, Legion Pool, the UGA Chapel, Phi Kappa Hall, Quarters A on the Health Sciences Campus, and Legion Field.
Johnson brings a wealth of expertise in student affairs and facilities management, previously serving in leadership roles in UAB’s Residence Life and Housing & Dining departments before stepping into the Hill Student Center director’s role in 2018. Carrying various certifications in student affairs education, facilities, and student unions, he has also served as the instructor of record for various undergraduate courses. He has been very involved in UAB’s campus community, including serving as chair of their Staff Council this past year.
Johnson holds a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Arts in secondary education, both from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
