International Student Life celebrates Nowruz with the Persian Student Union

International Student Life Culture Nights started on January 25 with the Vietnamese Student Association’s “Night in Saigon” and will end on April 18 with the Arab Culture Association’s “Arabian Night.” All students and members of the University community can learn about and celebrate the cultures of their peers while enjoying activities, food and performances.

“Cultural Nights have become a cornerstone event for International Student Life- Advised Organizations, showcasing the rich diversity and cultural heritage within the UGA community,” says Linden Dudley, director of International Student Life.

On March 28, the Persian Student Union hosted a celebration for Nowruz, or the Persian New Year. The event started with the arrangement of Haftsin, which is the centerpiece of Nowruz. Seven symbolic items are arranged on a table, all starting with the Persian letter for ‘S.’ The items symbolize prosperity, hope and renewal for the year ahead.

The event included a violin performance by Luca Davidson, as well as a Baba Karam dance performance. Next, attendees enjoyed a game of bingo. A varied assortment of Persian food was served for dinner before a second dance performance. To round out the night, the dance floor was opened for a lively finale to the celebration.

The leadership team and members of the Persian Student Union worked to organize the event and bring it to life.

“Cultural experiences are vital in fostering a sense of belonging and appreciation for our global society,” says Dudley. “They allow individuals to immerse themselves in different traditions, customs, and perspectives, promoting empathy and understanding.”

Culture Nights connect students from all corners of campus in a culturally immersive experience. Beginning with four to six organizations, Culture Nights have grown to spotlight more than 10 organizations throughout the spring semester. Attendance has surged to more than 800 since the start of the program, and that continues to grow with each additional event.

Students and members of the University community may connect with international student organizations at the International Street Festival on April 5 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on College Square in Athens. The International Street Festival is a day full of performances, food, and activities from cultures all around the world. The event aims to bring together students to experience the rich cultural diversity of the UGA community through cultural displays arranged by international student organizations.
