A Warm Welcome Back
I hope this message finds you well and rested after a rejuvenating holiday break spent with friends and family. As we embark on the new semester, I want to extend a warm welcome back to each of you.
I personally enjoyed a break filled with good food, mindless television, and catching up on my reading—a much-needed chance to recharge. I trust that you had the opportunity to engage in activities that bring you joy.
While the work we do is undeniably important, it’s crucial to remember that you are equally important. I appreciate the dedication each of you brings to our shared mission, but I encourage you to prioritize self-care. The things that fill your cup outside of work contribute immensely to your well-being and, in turn, enhance the impact you make within our community.
I’m genuinely excited about the opportunities and challenges that the spring semester holds for us. Thank you for your continued commitment to our students and the University of Georgia. Your contributions are invaluable, and I believe that our collective efforts will make this semester a memorable and successful one.
Here’s to a fantastic spring semester filled with growth, learning, and positive outcomes. Thank you for all you do, and I look forward to the journey ahead.

Celebrating Black History Month
As we step into the month of February, I want to take a moment to reflect on the significance of Black History Month and the contributions that we acknowledge to both our society and our institution. This month provides us with an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the rich tapestry of history that has shaped our community.
I’d like to highlight two important events taking place this month—the Holmes-Hunter Lecture and the Mary Frances Early Lecture. These events will serve as a platform to spotlight the remarkable contributions of these individuals, fostering a deeper understanding of their impact on our shared history.
As we engage with these events and the broader theme of Black History Month, let’s take a collective moment to reflect on the shoulders upon which we stand. Our successes are not only individual achievements but the culmination of the collective support we receive from our communities. It’s crucial to recognize and appreciate the perspectives that have enriched our experiences and provided valuable insights during both triumphs and challenges.
In the spirit of community and support, let’s be mindful of our role as a village within the University of Georgia. Each of us contributes to the strength of this community, and by fostering a collaborative and supportive environment, we can continue to uplift and encourage our colleagues and peers.
Remember, it truly takes a village, and we are that village.

Resilience
As we reflect on the recent tragedies that have impacted our university community, I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering dedication and commitment to our students and to our institution as a whole.
Throughout these trying times, you have demonstrated remarkable strength, compassion, and resilience in supporting and guiding our students through difficult moments. I want to commend you for the invaluable contributions you have made to the well-being of our community.
While we navigate through these challenging times, it is important to remember the importance of self-care. As caregivers and mentors, it can be easy to overlook our own needs while prioritizing the needs of others. I encourage each of you to take the time to prioritize self-care and well-being, whether it’s through engaging in activities that bring you joy, seeking support from colleagues, or accessing the resources available to you.
As we turn our gaze towards the optimism of spring, let us continue to draw strength from one another and from the incredible sense of community within our Division of Student Affairs. Together, we will navigate the journey ahead with hope and resilience, knowing that we have each other’s support every step of the way.

However, I urge us to reframe our perspective and see April for what it truly is – a month filled with countless opportunities for growth, celebration, and reflection.Throughout April, we have lots of amazing programs, activities, and initiatives taking place across campus. Time to recharge and reflect
As we draw close to the end of another academic year, I want to take a moment to extend my deepest gratitude to each of you for your unwavering dedication and hard work. The University of Georgia thrives because of your commitment to our students and their experiences on campus.
This year, as always, has presented its unique challenges and triumphs. Through it all, your resilience and passion have shone brightly, contributing significantly to our community’s success. As we approach the culmination of our students’ journeys at the commencement ceremonies next week, I am reminded of the vital role each of you plays in shaping these leaders of tomorrow.
I encourage you to take some well-deserved time for yourselves this summer. It’s important to recharge and reflect on the accomplishments of the past year. Seeing our students celebrate with their loved ones is not only a joy but a profound source of inspiration and motivation for all of us. These moments remind us of the impact of our collective efforts.
We have an exciting week of commencement activities ahead. I hope you find as much pride and joy in these celebrations as I do. Everyone in the division contributes to these successes, and each of you is a direct contributor to the bright futures our graduates will forge.
Thank you once again for all that you do. Let’s continue to support our students, making great things happen at UGA.

As the summer season unfolds, I hope each of you finds some well-deserved time to get away, relax, and spend cherished moments with your loved ones. Our work in Student Affairs is often demanding, and it’s essential to acknowledge the need for rest and rejuvenation.
We tackle hard challenges every day, supporting our students with unwavering dedication. To continue doing this vital work effectively, we must also prioritize our own well-being. Give yourselves permission to unplug and recharge.
You are an amazing team, and I am continually inspired by your commitment to our students’ welfare. Please extend that same level of care to yourselves. Enjoy the summer and take this opportunity to invest in your own happiness and health.

Dear Student Affairs Team,
I hope you are having a wonderful and rejuvenating summer. As we all take this time to recharge, it’s also important to start thinking about how we will show up for our students in the fall.
Every one of you plays a crucial role in the success, well-being, and sense of belonging of our students. Regardless of your title, role, or scope of work, your contributions are instrumental to our collective mission. As we plan for Welcome UGA, our campus-wide celebration for both new and returning students, I want to emphasize that your involvement, whether formal or informal, truly matters.
Those first six weeks of college are vital in determining a student’s ability to persist and graduate. Therefore, Welcome UGA is our opportunity to connect with students and foster a sense of community that will set them up for collegiate success. Students need you. I ask everyone in the Division to reflect on how you will show up for our students and support Welcome UGA. It is essential for them to know that this is not a one-off event but a reflection of who we are. The Division of Student Affairs is #ForTheStudents!
Here are some ways you and your department can get involved and make a difference:
Publish your events on the Involvement Network
To be eligible to be included on Welcome UGA promotion, ALL events need to be added to the Welcome UGA tracking spreadsheet AND submitted to the Involvement Network by August 1st
Brand your event with the Welcome UGA logos
Volunteer with other staff members to make a lasting impact
We can work together to build an environment where every student feels celebrated, inspired, and welcomed.
Enjoy your summer, and let’s gear up for an amazing Welcome UGA and a remarkable fall!

Campus will soon be buzzing
As we embark on the beginning of a new academic year, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate and acknowledge the incredible efforts each of you has made to prepare for this exciting time. Our campus will soon be abuzz with activity as we welcome new students and greet our returning students. There will be a lot happening, and your dedication to making this transition smooth and welcoming is truly commendable.
Let’s remember the power of a simple gesture—a friendly “hello,” a warm smile, or an extra helping hand can make all the difference to someone finding their way. Your commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment is what sets us apart and makes our community thrive.
I know you are ready for a fantastic fall semester. You are a dynamic team of individuals who bring energy, passion, and a deep commitment to our students, our division, and the University as a whole. Let’s really show up for our students, our colleagues, and our campus partners. Together, we set the standard. We are ready, we are prepared, and we are excited to be #ForTheStudents.

Student Affairs Colleagues:
I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to each one of you for the incredible work and dedication that went into starting this fall semester on such a strong and positive note. A successful launch like this doesn’t just happen on its own; it is the result of the countless hours, thoughtful planning, and tireless efforts of people across the Division of Student Affairs, each playing a vital role in making it happen.
Your commitment to our students, to each other, and to this university is evident in everything you do. The energy, enthusiasm, and excitement that we see across campus is a direct reflection of your hard work and dedication. I am incredibly grateful for your efforts and hope you can take a moment to recognize the significant impact you have made. Our students are thriving because of the environment you help create—one that is welcoming, supportive, and full of opportunities for growth and success.
As we move forward, I encourage all of us to carry this positive energy throughout the semester. Let’s continue to share it not just among our colleagues and students, but in every interaction we have. We have a unique opportunity to model the behavior, attitude, and energy we want to see reflected across our campus community. By doing so, we set the tone for a vibrant, inclusive, and dynamic environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to succeed.
Let’s be intentional about maintaining this momentum. Encourage one another, celebrate our successes, and stay committed to the work that makes such a profound difference in the lives of our students. The start of this academic year has been fantastic, and it is all because of each one of you. Be proud of what you’ve accomplished! You truly deserve it.

Student Affairs Colleagues:
I hope that you and your loved ones have been able to stay safe following Hurricane Helene. My heart goes out to all who have suffered because of the storm, and I want to reaffirm that we stand in solidarity with our neighbors and those affected by its devastation. Watching the coverage of the hurricane is a powerful reminder that we are all connected, and even when we are not directly touched, we share in the pain of our community.
In many ways, this parallels the work we do in Student Affairs. Fall is such an incredible time to be part of the University of Georgia. From students cheering at football games, to the energy that fills our campus as thousands move between classes, to the familiar sight of the student relaxing in a hammock between the trees outside my office – our campus is alive with excitement, anticipation, and joy.
Yet, amidst this vibrancy, it’s important to remember that not everyone shares in this sense of well-being. Many in our community are struggling in ways we may not see, and it is essential that we remain thoughtful, recognizing that our support is not only for our closest friends but also for our peers, colleagues, and neighbors. This is not a burden, but rather a privilege of being part of such an extraordinary community.
So, let’s enjoy the changing leaves and, at the same time, be the change we want to see in the world. We are all in this together.

November 2024
Student Affairs Colleagues:
As we enter November, the signs of fall are fully upon us, with the campus aglow in beautiful autumn colors and the warm light of the season casting a unique brightness on our spaces. Fall is a reminder of change—how the world around us shifts and adapts while so much still remains familiar and constant.
From the University of Georgia to the broader national and global communities, we continue to witness change in all forms. Yet, our dedication to our students, to each other, and to the community we cherish remains unwavering. Being part of such a vibrant, resilient environment is something I find especially meaningful.
Stepping into this month of reflection and thanksgiving, let’s take a moment to appreciate the beauty and connections that enrich our lives each day. Let’s embrace an attitude of gratitude. I am truly thankful for each of you in Student Affairs. Your commitment and spirit are inspiring, and I am grateful to be on this journey with such an incredible team.

Student Affairs Colleagues:
As the year winds down, I want to take a moment to reflect on an incredible fall semester and thank each of you for your hard work. The successes we’ve shared over these past months are because of you. Each of you has been instrumental in ensuring that our students are supported, empowered, and cared for. Your commitment has made this semester not just successful, but truly impactful for our students—and as they head into finals, they’ll finish strong with our continued encouragement and support.
As we prepare to close out 2024 and embrace the holiday season, I encourage you to prioritize self-care. While this is undoubtedly a time to celebrate with family and friends, it’s equally important to take time for yourself. You matter. You are important. You deserve moments of rest, reflection, and renewal.
If I don’t have the privilege of crossing paths with you this month, please know how deeply grateful I am for each of you. I am filled with appreciation for your efforts and joy in knowing the meaningful work you do each day.
Wishing you a season filled with peace, love, and well-deserved rest.

Thanks for being a part of the village!
As you will see in the first feature below, I have announced my retirement as Vice President for Student Affairs effective September 30, 2023.
As you can imagine, for the last 40 years, it has been the absolute joy of my life to work on behalf of students. UGA is such a special place, and I am exceptionally proud to have served an institution I hold so dear. There is absolutely no way that I could have done this for all these decades without so many of you helping me along the way. I am eternally grateful for you being a part of my village.
Here’s to whatever adventure will come my way next!

Where Did It Go?
It seems as if we just gathered with family for the holidays.
It seems as if we just waved goodbye to 2022 as we walked into 2023 with a great deal of hope.
And it seems that we just celebrated, once again in fact, another National Championship in football!
It’s obvious that time is flying by faster than we probably want it to. Yet, the requests from our students have not changed at all. As we continue to give our all to increase their development and overall positive experience here at UGA, let’s make sure to slow down and keep their needs in constant focus. It can seem, at times, the fast-paced way everything happens around us can push us to move quicker than needed. We know this work and the difference it has and will continue to make in the lives of students. Thus, let’s all stop and take a breath as we create our magic for those who need it most.
Before you know it, we will be gathered again with family celebrating the holidays or waving goodbye to 2023, or, with fingers crossed, hopefully celebrating a third National Championship. In the interim, be proud of all you are doing. Rest assured, it’s having an impact!

April 2023
After the Storm
When I was growing up, around this time of the year I often heard the saying, “April showers bring May flowers!” I always dreaded the month of April because, in my child-like way of thinking, it was going to rain and I’d be miserable the entire month. I remember telling my grandmother this once and she told me about the importance of the rain, how critical it was for plants and people and, most importantly, how the “showers of life” make everything stronger, enriched, and beautiful.
As we walk into the month of April and wrap up this school year, there will be a lot going on. It can feel like a multitude of “showers” are coming our way. My desire is that you will join me in remembering all the joy we will feel after we help our amazing students wrap up their school year. Just like the rain helps the flowers bloom, our commitment helps our students soar.
After all my years of experience, I have come to appreciate April and all that it brings to a campus community. Rose Kennedy once said, “Birds sing after a storm; why shouldn’t people feel as free to delight in whatever sunlight remains to them?”
So, as we handle this busy month in front of us, it is my hope that we all remember to delight in all the singing “after the storm.”
Be well.

Excellence is the goal
It is hard to believe we find ourselves at the end of the school year. Another year. Another cycle. With finals just around the corner, I have no doubt you will give it your all because when we start strong, we go strong and then we ultimately finish strong. That is who we are! But the idea of finishing strong can easily lead us to think of the academic year as a race; when school starts, we don’t stop running until summer comes along, only to start over again in a couple of months.
As we all know, our work does not really have a beginning or an end; excellence is ongoing and the constant goal. Together, we have mastered this concept. I am incredibly proud of our team, our partnership, and the steady quality of work year-round. I rejoice in your efforts, accomplishments, and, above all, how we continue to propel our amazing students to new heights.
Let’s all rest some before it’s time to start this cycle of excellence all over again!
Be well,

Graduates celebrate challenges, embrace their next steps
For the University of Georgia’s newest alumni, Commencement ceremonies mark a moment to celebrate the challenges they’ve overcome and embrace the challenges they’ll face in the future.
“Now is your time. It is your time to celebrate as you continue to the next chapter of your lives,” said Leah Brown, an orthopedic surgeon, UGA alumna and All-American for the GymDogs who served as the keynote speaker for the undergraduate Commencement ceremony, held May 12.

New Beginning
I hope that the remaining days of your summer are going great and, as we see our students returning “home” in the horizon, that you had some time to pause and get rejuvenated away from all the noise and bustle. In our profession, we see students coming and going all the time, and summer—sometimes—allows for some much-needed moments of solace. In reality, our work goes on year-round and, when we are deep in the trenches of performing it, it is easy to forget that we should afford ourselves the opportunity to relax, relate, recharge, and renew every day.
I once heard a quote: “Every morning a new sun greets us, and our new life begins.” As we move into the new school year, take a moment to rejuvenate every day, if possible. Each day is an opportunity for a new beginning and to make a difference in the lives of our amazing UGA students.
Keep strong!

Ear Tugs with Gratitude
What an amazing journey the last ten years have been serving as your Vice President for Student Affairs! This is my final message sharing with you as my last day as VP is 9/30/23. Retirement is calling my name, and it’s time to see what challenge this world has for me next. I’ve had the blessing to do many great things in this life but I am solid in my belief that one of those stellar experiences I have had is the honor of serving as your Vice President for the last 10 years.
When I was a child, every summer I used to leave Decatur, Georgia to head down to Albany, Georgia (where I was born) to spend the entire time with my grandmothers. It was total heaven. One of them worked all night and the other worked during the day, so it was around the clock being spoiled rotten! But, one of my fondest memories was watching the Carol Burnett show with one Grandma. At the end of the show, Carol would always tug her ear. When I asked my Grandma what that meant, she explained “that is her own private way to thank her Grandmother!” For some reason, that always impressed me that she would, without fail, remember her family member in that way.
So, as you continue to do this important work so needed on the UGA campus, I hope you picture me tugging on an ear indicating my total gratitude for all you do. We’ve seen much progress in the last ten years, but that was due to all our awesome staff who are committed to UGA students and their success. 24/7. Without fail.
I move forward and transition knowing that all the stellar work that has been done will continue without a hint of interruption. Here’s to many ear tugs for all the efforts you will put forth for our amazing students! Again, they deserve nothing less than our absolute best.
Thanks for an amazing journey, every memory, and much love!

Individual commitment to a group effort
I can feel it in the air. I can feel the energy that Student Affairs creates for the UGA community, and I cannot be more excited to be a part of it! I am looking forward to getting to know you and working alongside each of you to help our students succeed.
Vince Lombardi once said “Individual commitment to a group effort—that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” My individual commitment is to our students, to you, to the UGA community, and to this vibrant and important work which I will approach with my core principles of accessibility, accountability, authenticity, and adaptability.
What an amazing privilege I have been given to follow in the footsteps of VP Wilson who elevated the Student Affairs Division to heights beyond expectation. I am grateful for his leadership, his support, and mentorship. My goal is to continue the work that he accomplished during his ten year tenure, continue adapting to overcome the challenges that our students face, and continue our upward trend of success.
Together, we move forward #forthestudents

Thankful
It is November! Our students are deep into their college experience. The tree foliage is beginning to show shades of yellow and brown, the breeze is crisp and colder, pumpkins are carved, and turkey and gravy thoughts cross our minds as we make Thanksgiving plans. This year, for me, the arrival of November is a moment of reflection. How great is this opportunity that life has afforded us to work together to nurture, elevate, and help our students reach their full potential!
Voltaire once said that “Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.” The team spirit is palpable in the Division of Student Affairs. After one month in this position, I am humbled by your commitment to our students, your passion for UGA, and your dedication to this work. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your warm welcome and for caring for our students and each other. Thank you for all that you do. I see you and I celebrate our success in supporting our students.

Unwavering dedication and well-deserved rest
As we approach the end of another dynamic semester, I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to each and every one of you for your unwavering dedication and hard work. The fall semester has been an exciting journey, and it’s thanks to your collective efforts that we can reflect on a job well done.
From organizing engaging events to providing crucial support services, your commitment to enhancing the student experience has not gone unnoticed. I am truly appreciative of the countless hours, creativity, and passion you have invested in creating a vibrant and inclusive campus community.
While the overall tone of the semester has been positive, I am mindful that your efforts behind the scenes have been instrumental in ensuring its success. Your commitment to our students, coupled with your tireless work in various capacities across the division, has contributed significantly to the positive atmosphere on our campus.
As we approach the winter break, I encourage each of you to take this well-deserved time to relax, recharge, and renew. Whether you choose to spend time with loved ones, engage in personal hobbies, or simply enjoy some well-deserved rest, I hope this break provides the opportunity for rejuvenation.
Thank you once again for your outstanding contributions to the University of Georgia and the Division of Student Affairs. Your commitment to excellence is truly commendable, and I am grateful to have such a dedicated team by my side.
Wishing you all a restful and joyous winter break.

Winning
Yes, I admit it: I cried a little.
As the clock ran down on UGA’s recent National Championship win in football, I joined students and the Bulldog Nation in jubilant celebration. What a wonderful time for our community, coming together in shared spirit and happiness. How gratifying!
As VP, I am reminded that while it is not the same kind of competition, students and our community also win when we come together in other ways and lift each other up. When we are there to encourage and support each other in the classroom, in our groups and social settings, in our dining and living spaces—across campus life, those are everyday wins we also should value and celebrate.
After all, we know first-hand how great it feels when we’re all in it together! Go Dawgs!

Calm Summer Days
As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said, “we must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves; otherwise we harden.” Before we know it, students will be back on campus and that keeps us busy; so, it is important to take care of ourselves! We are half-way through the summer, which means we can continue to focus on reenergizing ourselves and find ways to relax and enjoy the remaining calmer days of summer.
Be ready for a busy semester. Knowing we remain in an uncertain environment, I am sure that you will give your best to take care of our students as they navigate the return to the most “normal” semester we’ve had since the beginning of the pandemic. However, to take care of others, we all must take care of ourselves first.
Thank you for all that you do and enjoy the rest of the summer!

Sound of Freedom
Lady Bird Johnson once said that “the clash of ideas is the sound of freedom.” Based on the work we do each day, as I reflect on this line of thinking in the Student Affairs context, her statement rings most true here at UGA and on college campuses around the country. As we leave the summer behind and the flow of the new semester takes us into the depths our commitments to students, expect nothing less than ideas clashing. We want this! I have always encouraged students to use their voice. If they do so, it will lead to many discussions, rigorous debate, and, at the heart of these conversations, new ideas will be born.
As we start this new academic year, let us continue to inspire our students to have meaningful dialogues. This is an election year. We can already witness the clashing of ideas, but we should remain encouraged by the energy that is created. And through all of this, I can also hear the sound of freedom resonating in our midst! What a valuable lesson for us and our amazing students – now and always!

The Dash
There is a poem by Linda Ellis called “The Dash.” Through her words, she eloquently helps us reflect that when someone leaves this world, although the date of their birth and their death are highlighted, what’s important in life is everything that happens in the dash between those dates. From the day we are born until we gasp our last breath, we have new opportunities every day to be the best version of ourselves. During our dash, we can create some amazing spaces for people to be and to heal, to make a difference in our community, to be the change we so fervently want to see happen, or to simply show kindness to someone who needs it.
As I talked to many of our amazing new students recently, I reminded them that they have four years at UGA, but what they do during that time is what matters most. I encouraged them to get involved, to make this place their home, to create a great experience for themselves and to leave their mark in this community so that when they leave our care, others will always know they were here!
In the same way, I want to encourage you to do the same as you support our students every day. Make it a personal goal to create a lasting legacy so that when you are done with your work for UGA, you walk away knowing that no student will ever doubt that you made a difference in their lives.
In other words, do all you can to make your dash count!

Ready to Go
As we excitedly welcome students back to campus for spring term, we continue to work together to ensure students have the most fulfilling experience possible.
We have learned much from our efforts in recent months. While there are, no doubt, challenges with COVID-19 still ahead, I am confident we will use our new knowledge to connect with students and help them find the engagement and support they need—in whatever ways—even more fully in the days to come.
I know many are eager for the promise of widespread COVID-19 vaccinations soon forthcoming. Our team in the University Health Center is helping to lead campus efforts to provide vaccinations. As we move forward with that process, I ask that you help students and each other remain diligent in following established health and safety guidelines and focused on creating safe, supportive spaces where students can learn and thrive.
With all that’s happening in our world today, there is no better time for the educational experience that UGA offers. Thank you for all that you do to make the student experience what it is today.
Best wishes for a wonderful 2021!

Building Up
As we near a full year of disruptions from the pandemic, I have been reflecting a lot lately on the “COVID fatigue” and frustration that I—and I imagine many others—feel. While there are more students on campus this spring, we are all ready for a return to the fully vibrant campus life we know and love.
Yet as I shared with students recently, though we might wish, we are not through the pandemic yet. We must each continue to push through and do our part to keep our campus community safe and well. These are times when we have to be mentally strong and find hope and faith in our future—and each other. It is what the real essence of being resilient is all about.
I know it is easy sometimes to let our exhaustion or anger wear down our willingness to grant grace and embrace our differences, toward the building of shared community. But I trust, as these next few challenging months continue, we will all draw on each other for strength and understanding. We are in this together, and I am assured we will emerge renewed for our bright future ahead. As always, we can choose to build up or tear down. I’m choosing to build up!

This past year I have been serving on a national task force for NASPA—Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, discussing the future of student affairs.
We have met with stakeholders across the country—students and college presidents, community and business leaders, faculty and student affairs staff. Across all of these perspectives, I have been heartened to hear such a strong shared value for our work in student affairs, not only toward the success and well-being of our students, but for society as a whole. It has been highly affirming.
At the same time, this effort has also brought into high relief our continued need to learn and adapt, as individuals, organizations, and as a field, to meet the opportunities of tomorrow. We talk often about all the ways that students and the world are changing, and I am reminded more than ever how adeptly we must continue to move as well, while keeping our core strengths vibrant. These challenges are real, but they are ones I know we will meet directly and openly.
At the upcoming 2021 NASPA Virtual Conference, I will be joining a panel of national chief student affairs officers from our group to talk more about this effort. I am assured at UGA, we will continue to lead in this way, well into the future! We always have and, expectedly, this makes me very proud.

Thoughts of Fall
As we embrace the good news of widespread vaccine availability for our community and continuing low numbers of cases, I know many of us are having thoughts of fall.
The possibilities for a return to a robust, vibrant, in-person campus experience for students are at the top of our collective wish lists. While we still need to pay close attention to our campus and the world around us, and continue to be careful and nimble, there should be no level of shame in wanting to see campus fully alive again and serving all of our amazing students here daily.
Yet know whenever we get there, we will also be changed. New approaches and successes we have had during the pandemic, in digital service and engagement, in student hardship support, in counseling and advising, service delivery, and in so many ways, will remain key aspects of our work. Our tireless efforts and dedication to students in this time have made us stronger and better and improved our practice.
While I am incredibly eager for all students to return, I am even more excited to know we have that much more to share.

The Big Picture
The recent recurrence of that annual rite of passage—the photo line of happy graduates at the UGA Arch—is only the latest visible reminder that it is indeed a time of celebration.
While we are all well aware of how this year has looked and felt like no other, our students have continued their exceptional accomplishments, in and out of the classroom. They have been resilient and dedicated and have every reason to be joyous—and so do we, as we have had direct contributions to so many of their successes this year. How awesome to be a part of their journey.
Over these final weeks of the term, UGA is hosting a series of thoughtfully planned graduation events, including International Graduation, Lavender Graduation, and Rite of Sankofa, to honor our students. This year’s graduates have achieved in ways others have never been asked to. I propose that we continue celebrating them in the same outstanding manner! As always, they deserve nothing less!

Re-awarding
As I shared with many of you at our recent Student Affairs Celebration, I think every single one of us deserves an award this year. Just making it to this point feels like a spectacular achievement.
We are tired. Our hearts are full. But knowing the remarkable impact that we have had on the student experience—and the whole campus—this year, makes being here even more special.
As campus life becomes a little more familiar each day, go forth with the knowledge that you and your individual and collective efforts this year have been seen and valued far beyond Student Affairs—perhaps as never before. I am grateful for all the ways, through countless challenges, that you have continued to inspire and support students, staff, community members, and each other.
I hope you have an amazing and well-deserved summer!

A Sigh of Relief
Every year I share with new UGA families at Orientation that I am always a tad bit nervous the first six weeks of a new academic year. Incoming students (particularly our new ones) are still finding their way, adjusting to the college experience—new places to live, new peers, new fields of study, new lifestyles.
This week marked the sixth week of our fall term, and happily, overall, students seem to be in a good place. With so many academic, engagement, social opportunities happening all over campus, it is exciting to feel the energy and vibrancy of our beloved community.
As we move forward in our work, I am personally taking this moment as a sign of relief for all the wonderful things I see, once again, with our amazing students. Through some interesting and challenging times, they have and should continue to inspire us all.

Markers
Since arriving at UGA—now 44 years ago—I have always yearned for tangible ways that I and other African American UGA community members could see ourselves and our heritage celebrated on campus.
So it was momentous to join in celebration recently with my fellow brothers and sisters, as UGA dedicated new markers for the nine historically Black sororities and fraternities. These beautiful new granite markers, set in the heart of campus on the West Lawn of the Tate Student Center, are another permanent reminder that we are celebrated here and acknowledged for all our years of contributions.
In knowing what these markers mean for me and so many others, I am beyond thrilled, humbled, and so very grateful.
To this upcoming season of Thanksgiving, I add my special gratitude and a wish that all may be seen and celebrated here.

To the Future
As President Morehead shared in his recent State of the University address unveiling UGA’s 2025 Strategic Plan, “It is paramount that our students develop the knowledge and skills they need to make a positive difference in the lives of others.”
Strategies in the University plan include expanding experiential learning, promoting student wellness, increasing access and success for underrepresented and other underserved students, and creating more opportunities for students to engage in our service mission.
For Student Affairs, these efforts are at the heart of our mission.
At our upcoming State of Student Affairs event on February 12, we will introduce the Student Affairs 2025 plan. Our plan connects closely with efforts across UGA to create a more meaningful, rewarding, and valuable student experience.
I hope that you will join us next week, and more importantly, over the next five years to help UGA students make an even more positive difference in the world.

Full Speed Ahead
I love this time of year, with student life on campus at full pace. From the recent student government elections, which saw record participation, to the thousands involved in amazing student happenings like Dance Marathon, India Night, Black History Month events, and so much more, it is obvious the critical role students play in creating a vibrant, thriving community at UGA.
Ensuring that students find a sense of belonging and engage fully in campus life are central parts of our mission in Student Affairs—and at the heart of our new 2025 plan. As we build on the all of successful engagement opportunities available today, may we help even more students discover and join in all that UGA has to offer.

What They Didn’t Teach Us
With all that has happened over my nearly 40-year career in higher education (and, until recently, that seemed like a lot!), the last few weeks have certainly been a new experience for me, as I can imagine for most in our UGA community.
There is simply no playbook for where we are. In a very short time, as the University shifted fully to online classes, we customized wide-ranging health and telehealth services for COVID-19; coordinated an unexpected residential move-out and fee refund plans; supported countless students with medical, academic, financial, housing, personal, and other needs; worked with students returning from overseas—and international students remaining here; helped faculty provide accommodations in online classes—and moved our own classes to online models; connected with hundreds of student leaders and organizations; created new online services, programs, resources, and digital workflows; worked to inform, reassure, and support students and staff; advanced new planning and initiatives; and somehow that seems like only the beginning!
The weeks have felt like seconds. Even I know how to customize Zoom now (which I admit, I had rarely used two weeks ago). But maybe the most instructive thing for me is how much this moment in particular, beyond any formal preparation we could have received, has required the expertise of Student Affairs and the invaluable support for the learning environment we provide.
So many in Student Affairs have gone far above and beyond to help, volunteering, working around the clock, being creative, resourceful, committed, and truly coming together as a UGA team. I have never been prouder to work with you.
We talk a lot about helping students to be resilient. This is a time where we all need to be resilient. There are still many uncertain days ahead. Many students continue to be in need. The transition to online learning and student support will come with new challenges. We are all adjusting to something new and unexpected. Yet we are needed now, more than ever. I am assured we will eagerly and energetically answer the call.
I often times will share with others when dealing with certain issues, “They definitely did not teach this in my classes!” And, quite candidly, I am not sure they could have. Thus, I appreciate your continued patience and diligence, as we learn new lessons on how to work and serve together in these new ways. I am certain that we will come out of this stronger and better, to the great benefit of students and the entire UGA community.
Thank you so much for all that you are doing. As always, be well and take good care.

Why I Always Say Amazing
If every cloud has a silver lining, with all that’s come from COVID-19, it is that so many at UGA and in Student Affairs have continued to find ways to shine.
Students donating their time and fee refunds to the community and their peers. Staff volunteering for food drives and fundraising efforts and countless other supports for those in need. Friends and donors offering resources and encouragement. Everyone creatively and selflessly adapting to working and learning and serving in new ways, some that may not have seemed possible even a short time ago.
With so many among us struggling right now, you all have truly stepped up and shown what UGA is all about. Recently, someone spoke to me about the “before” of all this. It is almost hard for me to remember what was “before,” but I am keenly aware of the “now.” And, what I see from you and so many others is, in a word: amazing. I always say it, but it is true.
As President Morehead shared recently, all of us are eager to get back to an open and vibrant campus and resume normal operations, but that will take some time. Even at the most challenging moments, let us appreciate what we have as well. My thanks to you for all that you are doing—and will do. And as I have taken to saying now, be well, safe, sheltered, and encouraged! We are amazing and will get through this together.

On Reflection
Each year around the anniversary of my mother’s death, I travel home to Decatur to put flowers on her headstone and share news of my life. As I did so recently, I was overcome with emotion. In fact, for a time, I simply shed a few tears. Where to begin? I can only imagine what my mother would have thought about our world and the issues of today.
As I shared with students recently, like so many around the world, I am appalled by the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and now, Rayshard Brooks, following the violent deaths of too many Black community members before them. Over my lifetime, the path to justice and equity has been long and unsteady—and continues still.
Many in our community are hurting deeply in this moment, and like me, sometimes at a loss for words. We need to be sure to take care of ourselves, so we can continue to be there for our students. And we must listen closely to their cries for change. It has been heartening to see so many students and student groups across UGA step up and use their voices and move toward positive change. Our Black students especially, need us to support and stand with them. Together we all must do our parts and take meaningful action where we can to further improve our student community at UGA—and toward the betterment of our world.
My mother always believed in having the tough conversation from which good may come. Now it is our turn.

Ready for Launch
This spring we announced a bold new 2025 plan for UGA Student Affairs focused on three core strategies: 1) Improve student development of essential skills; 2) Increase meaningful student engagement on campus and in the community; and 3) Increase student well-being and success across the educational experience.
With all that has happened in our world since spring, the importance of these core strategies has been affirmed in countless ways. Today we are ready to launch!
This month, we have opened two new departments—a new University Transitions office to provide dedicated support for key times of university transition across the student experience, as well as a new department of Engagement, Leadership, and Service, to expand engagement and infuse leadership and service across all types of student involvement.
We will also soon be launching new collaborative teams across Student Affairs and the campus, including a new student learning collaborative, well-being network, digital engagement, data, and IT teams, student organization advisors, and a university transitions group. Many of you will be asked to join one or more of these teams, and I am grateful for the insights and leadership I know you will bring.
Making our 2025 plan come alive depends on all of us working together creatively and energetically. These are challenging times, but I am fully confident we can continue to embrace the opportunities ahead together for the benefit of UGA students and the betterment of our world.

Welcome Back
We are a few short weeks away from the exciting time of year when students return to campus. Preparations for this fall have been unlike any other. I am extremely proud of all the ways that our Student Affairs team has risen to this moment with COVID-19—leading and joining campus efforts to keep our students and community as healthy and safe as possible. Hopefully, with our collaborative work together, our students will continue to have an amazing experience here.
As we ready the campus, we are also playing critical roles in efforts to improve our campus culture and strengthen our learning environment. This fall, I will have the honor of chairing a new Presidential Task Force on Race, Ethnicity, and Community, alongside other new efforts to create a more diverse and inclusive UGA. This work will further strengthen UGA in some important and needed ways.
We are also advancing key priorities to benefit students, particularly with the recent launch of our Student Affairs 2025 plan. Through new collaborative teams, we will be working more closely than ever to ensure that all students practice well-being, engage meaningfully, and develop the essential skills they need to succeed in life. Even during these different and unexpected times, this goal remains constant.
I am excited to welcome students back. Whatever new challenges this fall may bring, I am assured we will be there together #forthestudents. Let us all take good care of ourselves and each other. Welcome back!

Still Learning
I think we can all easily agree this has been a start to a new school year unlike any before at UGA. It has been wonderful to see students back on campus and engaging with each other in new (masked and socially distanced) ways. It has also been challenging as students have online and hybrid courses and are still adjusting to new modes of learning, along with many other new aspects of campus life.
We are always a learning community, but I am especially reminded of how much learning we’re all doing right now. When it comes to campus life and COVID-19, our efforts are constantly evolving. We get new information each day. Some of our approaches prove successful; others require continued focus. We refine and adapt and keep students at the center.
I know we all look forward to a time when today’s pandemic is a distant memory, but as we learn through this together, let’s continue to meet the moment to support our students—in all ways and modes possible. As always, they are ready to learn. We should be just as ready.

Still the Same
With all of the modifications we have made as a campus to ensure the health and safety of our community through COVID-19, we also need to remember that our students still have many of the same needs and interests as ever. Life got crazy in some ways, but it did not change in many other ways.
Whether that’s finding an academic path, building community, taking on leadership roles or service opportunities, preparing for careers and future fields of study, and yes, having fun and just enjoying their peers and campus life—all of those are pursuits that many students are actively seeking through this time. While we all acknowledge life at UGA can’t happen as it has in previous terms, we all must take responsibility for making sure we are continuing to meet the needs and interests of students to the fullest extent. An act as simple as reaching out to say hello and offer your support can be a huge help. Students are depending on us to be creative and deliver on our commitment to creating the best student experience possible—and they, and we, should expect no less.
As I have shared before, we will get through this together. Let’s make every attempt through the coming days to keep in focus our bread and butter: the reason we initially decided to do this work from the outset. While our work may look different right now, it might be more vital than ever. Thanks as always for all that you are doing.

To Firsts
In many ways, this has been the most unusual semester in my nearly forty-year career. We will be moving classes fully online following Thanksgiving break later this month—another first for me during a fall term. While we will continue to support students however possible in the residence halls and across Student Affairs, this shift will bring another new challenge for students to finish strong in a new way.
We have asked a lot of students and our staff through this pandemic, and I am proud of how we each have responded. Through many continuing unknowns and firsts, we have been resourceful, dedicated, and found strength in each other (even sometimes from afar). I am assured that we will take what we have learned over these past months, in engaging students digitally, in hybrid modes, and in whatever ways students need, and make it work to the fullest extent.
As ever, thank you for all that you do—and may we all remember to give thanks often. Fortunately, we still have so much more to share.

Engage and Learn
As we enter the last few weeks of this most unusual term, I again want to say thank you, to each and every one of you, for your commitment through all we have navigated together this year. As a Student Affairs team, you have truly been unbelievable, and I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together on behalf of students. I look forward to our continued opportunities in the new year, including a number of exciting new initiatives for you as staff.
For many years, Student Affairs has offered numerous staff programs and resources. Led by the President’s Task Force for Staff Development, UGA is creating new additional opportunities for all staff across the institution. Along with a revamped Professional Education Portal (PEP), there will be new efforts related to onboarding, mentoring, performance and talent management, and much more. We are excited to join in planning and, in some cases, leading the conversation on facilitating new and creative solutions to challenges our staff face.
We will, of course, continue our ongoing staff development offerings in Student Affairs, along with these new resources. In all, we are as committed as ever to ensure you are given the space to build community, develop yourself professionally, and continue to hone your skills. Now and ever, you help to make the success of our students possible. Let us continue to engage and learn!

Recognizing the Merits of Simplicity
As we embark on a new academic term, I find myself reconnecting with our core in Student Affairs: meeting the needs of students.
Like much of the world today, sometimes our work can seem far too complicated – so many individual perspectives, resources, technologies, and opportunities to consider. My mother used to have a saying: “there is merit in simplicity!” Although, as a youngster I did not understand the power of her words, I definitely can relate to them today. These words should be a motivating factor, at times, in our work. Focusing on our core calls on us to listen and not over complicate. Together we have lifetimes of experience in helping students to navigate and succeed in college and far beyond. Sometimes when we connect directly and humbly with students – in the simplest ways possible – we find what’s needed and can offer them so much.
It is a given that we will witness complexity and difficulty from time to time as we do our work. In this new year, I challenge us all to seek out and enjoy the “merits of simplicity” as we keep students first in mind.

Re-knowing
February is Black History Month, which as an African American, always has special meaning for me. My heritage is an integral part of who I am and how I interact in the world. It is not, however, the only part.
Sometimes in our work with students I think we depend too much on readily defined categories and miss out on the incredible richness and complexity each of us offers. We are each an amalgam of many talents, experiences, perspectives, histories, and dreams, and to fully realize a shared community together, we must see and value the whole of who we each are.
As we celebrate this month of remembrance, I challenge us all to re-know each other anew and look deeper for all that we have to share. You might be surprised to see the many gifts others bring to the table.

(Not) Breaking
Next week during spring break, hundreds of UGA students will NOT be at a vacation destination.
Instead, they will be out serving local communities, engaging with leaders, residents, and peers through a number of Student Affairs-sponsored experiential learning programs. From IMPACT service trips to communities across the eastern U.S. to the new Student Tour of Georgia, many UGA students will use the break from classes to engage in the world, learning about history, culture, industry, and important issues facing us all.
It is exactly these types of hands-on, immersive learning opportunities—and the great eagerness of our students to engage in them—that make the UGA student experience so special. So as we are all enjoying the break, know that, for many, the learning continues—just as it should.

Needing Each Other
In my experience, one of our greatest strengths at UGA is our connection and commitment to each other, particularly in times of need. Whenever something happens that negatively impacts members of our community, we are quick to offer support and understanding in all the ways possible.
For many here, the last few weeks have been an especially challenging time. It is in these moments of trial that our strength together is most needed and felt. As we move forward, I urge us all to continue to find ways to lift others up. Every single member of our community is important, and the more we can share our support and look out for each other, whatever our differences, the more positive change we can create together and the better UGA can become.

Growing Stronger
One of our core values in Student Affairs is lifelong learning—we are always learning and open to growth, and we foster this in others.
With the end of spring classes and commencement soon upcoming, I recognize we clearly have put our value into practice this academic year. For all of the amazing student and staff accomplishments we have to celebrate, there have also been a number of challenges, which have tested the strength and resilience of our community and pushed us to change and grow in new ways. Looking back, it has been a year of true learning not only for students, but for all of us.
As we move forward, I trust and hope we have grown stronger from experience. I am confident we are even better equipped to serve our students and help them succeed—and I know we all will continue to learn. Here’s to summer and all of the needed revitalization that comes with it!

Busy Summer
With the ever-quick pace of the academic year, we sometimes want to think of summer as a chance to hit pause. While reflecting and recharging are critical, summer is also a full season in student life. Along with thousands of students taking summer classes and others engaging experiential learning opportunities around the world, it is also a fantastic time to look forward.
This summer, we are beginning a new 2025 strategic planning process for Student Affairs, which will help define our direction for the years to come. I am incredibly excited about the opportunities ahead. Using this time to continue to improve the student experience is a summer best spent!
Through all of these efforts, here’s to some times of rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation! Happy summer.

Free
In this month we celebrate our nation’s freedom, I am especially thankful for the opportunities we each have to stand up and be heard.
Often, especially on social media, it can seem like there is an endless stream of perspectives to consider. But consider the opposite—without the opportunity to express ourselves freely. Of course, that doesn’t mean we will agree with or appreciate every perspective shared. But we have the right to offer counter perspectives and lift up others all the same.
In our work with students, let us remember to help them value their individual voices and the important perspectives they have to share, while simultaneously hearing others.

Here to Thrive
This weekend we will welcome incoming first-year students to the residence halls through Hunker Down with Housing. I always look forward to walking through the bustling parade of carts and boxes and rolling bags to share well wishes with the eager new students, many of whom have been anticipating this day for months, if not years, to embark on a new chapter in life.
Yet each year I also find myself drawn to the others in line, the families and friends who join in this special occasion, one they often find to be bittersweet at times. In those tears and hugs and extended goodbyes, I feel anew the recognition and responsibility that each new student is the precious joy of someone’s life.
As we welcome our newest Bulldogs, I urge us all to hold dear the understanding that all of our students, every single one, came here to thrive, and there is someone out there counting on us to push them towards success.

A Welcome Reminder
Recently we were fortunate to host a visit from student affairs leaders from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland (pictured above). They had selected UGA, along with two other U.S. institutions, as models for student life, as evidenced in the annual Niche rankings, where UGA places in the top five for Best Student Life.
As our colleagues met UGA staff and students from across campus, they continually shared how impressed they were with the outstanding team, exceptional campus, and welcoming community they experienced here.
Sometimes we can take for granted how blessed we are at UGA, but seeing us anew in the eyes of peers from around the world makes me ever grateful—including for the opportunity to continue to learn from others and make UGA an even better place for students in the future.

Strengthened in the Storm
At our annual Engage! Conference last week, our keynote speaker, Dr. Karen Reivich, offered a powerful insight from nature: trees that survive a storm grow stronger.
Like the roots of those trees, we, too, get stressed and stretched at trying times in our daily lives. So do our students. Yet as Dr. Reivich reminded us all, as we build and teach resilience, those challenges and storms become vital opportunities for growth—for us and our students.
It can be hard sometimes to be optimistic in times of struggle, but doing so gives all of us the confidence and resolve to thrive.

Something Must Be Done!
Amid all of the joys and successes we have in today’s world, there are also myriad opportunities. Yet when it comes to those challenges in life where we most feel, “Something must be done,” we often look first to others to act—instead of what we can do ourselves.
In our work with students, we must remind them that solutions to issues will not magically appear, or that others will care as they do. We each have the power and responsibility to act where we see opportunity. This will happen more quickly if we start with, “I must do something!”
When we’re all willing to step forward, something can be done.

For Student Learning and Success
Over the past year, I have had the wonderful opportunity to co-chair the President’s Task Force on Student Learning and Success. This has been a productive and rewarding experience as we have looked to create an even more comprehensive and cohesive learning environment for our students.
Today, I am thrilled to share here the product of this group’s work, and I look forward to our efforts with campus partners to make these recommendations a reality for students. Future Ready
As part of the President’s Task Force on Student Learning and Success over the past year, we had numerous conversations about our work with UGA students. One of the major themes we considered was how we best prepare students for the changing world ahead.
Talents including critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, communication, data literacy, resilience, and empathy will be vital for our students’ future success. In addition to the recommendations of the task force, I challenge us all to consider how we are intentionally helping students to prepare for tomorrow, for future leadership and stewardship of the world’s communities.
In many ways this challenge is embedded in our core mission in Student Affairs – to inspire students to engage meaningfully, grow intellectually, and build character. May we rise to that challenge each day #forthestudents.

Education from a Legacy
Last week I attended the funeral services for UGA’s first Vice President for Student Affairs, Dwight Oliver Douglas. Dr. Douglas was the VP when I was a student at UGA, and I later served alongside him as a staff member here for many years.
As a model and mentor, Dwight was someone who taught me so much, even when I didn’t always realize it. From our interactions and watching his work, I learned about empowering people, treating everyone fairly, listening more than talking, and the great value of patience. Looking back, he may not even have realized how much I and others drew from his leadership, his “pouring out vessels of knowledge.”
In our work on campus, we, too, should remember that students and others learn from us, even when we least expect it. In turn, we will learn some of our most valuable lessons without seeking to do so. I’m proud to know Dwight’s lessons will live on through me and so many others for years to come.

The Spring of Our Lives
It is easy on a magnificently warm, sun-filled day like today, flowers newly abloom, to believe spring has fully arrived.
And then we have a cold day. A grey day. A rainy day. And the spring we knew had made it seems to be missing again. This is life.
Sometimes in our work we need to remind students that today, the immediate, is temporary. A situation for a student may seem inescapable—a cold set in—but tomorrow is still ahead with new promise. We must be resilient and hopeful and resourceful and know assuredly the spring of life is coming, however difficult to see in the moment.
On those sunny days, we can savor the longer light, bask in the radiant colors, and thrill in spring once more, while being blessed for the journey.

Celebration
As a huge college football and UGA fan, it was exciting to see a UGA program-record three football stars, Roquan Smith, Isaiah Wynn, and Sony Michel, selected in the first round of the recent National Football League draft. What a fantastic accomplishment for these student athletes, deserving of celebration by the Bulldog Nation.
Of course, on this Commencement week, we celebrate many more students—indeed 5,834 new UGA graduates—who will also take on amazing new opportunities, in every field and locations across Georgia and around the world. While most will enjoy less fanfare this week than our football heroes, their achievements are no less highlight-worthy, and they deserve every available means of our celebration. Our graduates have clearly shown the dedication, know-how, and resilience to make a true difference in the world, and I can’t wait to see what comes next for them all. They are first round draft picks in the game of life, and I am so incredibly proud of them. May we all join in congratulations!

Making a Difference for Students Every Day
You have likely heard me say (because I say it a lot!) that we have the best staff on campus. Our staff are who makes Student Affairs special. Through counseling, supporting, encouraging, and guiding, they strive tirelessly to make a difference for students every single day.
To Student Affairs’ staff, I hope you know how much you are valued and appreciated… and not only by me and our campus partners. Our students express their appreciation for you to me and my colleagues constantly. Our students are what makes UGA special, but you are what makes their experience exceptional.
Thank you for inspiring students to succeed – to engage meaningfully, grow intellectually, and building character. Thank you for all that you do!

Summertime Fun Time?
I have (now distant) memories of quiet work summers on campus, filled with significant time for reflection and relative calm.
Summers today are abuzz with a different pace of life: students continuing their studies, meetings, planning, looking back, looking ahead, connecting, and the list goes on. While I still claim a few important moments of reflection and time away, I welcome the summers of today.
In the excitement of campus greeting new students and families, in the energizing conversations with faculty, staff, and peers across the country, in the digging deep in where we are and looking at what’s possible, we renew our daily commitment to help students succeed and flourish. That’s why we are here—and as summer reminds me often—it’s a purpose we all share. Happy summer, my friends!

Still True
I was reminded recently of a quote from former U.S. president, Woodrow Wilson—then a college president: “The real intellectual life of a body of undergraduates, if there be any, manifests itself not in the classroom, but in what they do and talk of and set before themselves as their favorite objects between classes and lectures.”
Of course, I would add graduate and professional students as well, but there is a fundamental truth here—and an important mandate for us in Student Affairs. If we are to inspire students to grow intellectually, we need to challenge and support them to take on the important topics of the day, provide space for these challenging dialogues, and yes, encourage truly authentic engagement with each other. From the classroom across the student experience, what students “do and talk of” together has meaning and holds the bright promise of discovery and growth.

New
At one point in our lives, we have all been the new person. Whether starting a new job, joining a new group, or back to our first days of school, we can all appreciate the challenging process in finding our place in a new setting.
This time of transition is especially true for our students – and our staff. Transitioning to college can be a huge adjustment for many students and one that may only begin at the official Orientation. I am excited about the work of UGA’s new Council on the First-Year Experience, which is looking at additional ways to support student transition across the entire first year and beyond, helping students find meaningful connections and pathways to their futures.
This week we are also launching a new year-long on-boarding process for Student Affairs staff. As with students, we need to be intentional in our support, providing staff with the best opportunity to succeed in their new roles.
After all, we all know what it’s like to be new.

Using Your Voice
With a line sometimes stretching out the door of the Tate Center last week, students and UGA community members cast votes in local and statewide elections, and many will do so in their local polling locations today. It is a wonderful democratic scene. For some, this is a first time voting. For us all, it is a chance to have a say in the leadership and future of our communities.
While I am thrilled about having a campus advance polling location, we all need to remember that our civic responsibility does not end in the voting booth. I frequently encourage students to use their voices and be heard throughout the year on the important topics we face. Our campus and the local community provide countless spaces to have and model meaningful dialogue on a full range of issues. These exchanges are critical. I am not overly idealistic, as I know we will not all agree. Yet only through dialogue and continuing to come together may we move toward the campus and world we want to see. If not us, then who?

Thinking and Doing
“Thinkers think and doers do. But until the thinkers do and the doers think, progress will be just another word in the already overburdened vocabulary of talkers who talk.”
~ Adapted from Francois de La Rochefoucauld
As the winter holidays near, I am reminded again how thankful I am to serve at a University with such a storied history and brave ambition for the future. Over my years at UGA, it is easy to see the wonderful growth – for students, the campus, and members of our community. I am proud and grateful.
Yet, as I look forward, and think about what today’s students will need in tomorrow’s ever-changing world, I am reminded of how we must continue to marry thought and action. What we are busily doing today may benefit from new thinking. Our grand thoughts and dreams, to become real, must meet practice.
I am energized by the promise of our work ahead for and with students. I am appreciative of all that each of you do. And I know together, more than just talk, we will think and do whatever it takes for our students to succeed. Best wishes for a fantastic end of fall term and winter break!

Resolutions
Happy New Year to you all! I hope that you have had a wonderful break and fantastic start to spring term!
This time of year, people often ask me about my resolutions for the upcoming year. In addition to the usual personal list, I often make resolutions for our work in student affairs. What I like most about new years and resolutions is the opportunity to create anew. Where we might have fallen short or had challenges in the past, we have a new chance, a new time for growth and renewal.
The truth is the new year is only a marking point: we have that same opportunity to create anew, to grow from where we are, every single day. This year, every day, I hope we all are resolved to interact genuinely with those around us and continually be open to listen and learn. I hope these resolutions are contagious for each and every one of us.
Best wishes, and as I say, let’s make it a wonderful 2017!

The Impossible Conversations
Recently we were blessed to have Student Affairs Visiting Practitioner, Dr. Ajay Nair, Senior Vice President and Dean of Campus Life at Emory University, share with us his wisdom on creating a vibrant student learning community. One of the jewels that emerged for me from Ajay’s words was the idea of the impossible conversation.
In this day and age, there is so much happening in our world that can make it seem like some conversations are more impossible than ever. Yet if we’re doing what’s best for students we know we have to find ways to engage those conversations still—however uncomfortable, regardless of how strongly we may disagree, however impossible.
Recently I heard a student say, “Fear should lead us to curiosity.” The things of which we are most fearful are those we most need to explore and understand. So I am challenging myself and you, for the betterment of students and our learning community, be curious—and be open to what we may discover.
I am ready to take on the impossible. I hope you are too.

Start with Students
In recent weeks I have had the fortunate opportunity to meet with a number of fellow senior student affairs leaders from across the southeast and around the nation through professional development groups. The more we have shared together as leaders, the more familiar these conversations have become.
Through these conversations, I’ve learned that so much of our work in student affairs at UGA is common to campuses everywhere: helping to prepare and challenge students to think and grow, learn to lead, engage, and have an impact. Our challenges may not be unique, but our response to them in the way we support our students is what makes us special. I’ve also discovered that our worries may underestimate the maturity and resilience of our students – many are stronger and doing better than we may presume.
UGA students will go on to be leaders not only on campus, but in communities across the state and far beyond. When we do what’s best for students—not only for here and today, but for the rest of their lives—that’s what’s really noteworthy.

Pressing Ahead
As you will read below, we are thrilled for the recent major gift (the latest in a series) by Jack and Nancy Fontaine to support the Fontaine Center and alcohol awareness and education at UGA. This amazing commitment will continue to expand the Center’s reach, its Collegiate Recovery Community, and educational programming for our campus and far beyond.
I am exceptionally grateful to Jack and Nancy for their continued investment in UGA and our incredible students. Their willingness to take action to address the needs of our community and help us to lead others is truly exemplary.
This gift also adds to a record fundraising year for Student Affairs – more than $5 million in pledges to date and counting. At the end of February, Student Affairs became the first unit at UGA to fully meet and exceed its capital campaign goal (104%)—three years ahead of schedule. This is an exciting achievement, but we press ahead with great resolve. When we have ensured that every student has the opportunity to reach their fullest potential, regardless of cost, then we can truly celebrate. After all, each and every effort should be for them!

Finding Closure
As we near the end of the academic year, I am again reminded of the hope in bringing closure. The challenges of this year—in the national discourse, in unsettling events, in the lives of students and staff—will not immediately disappear following commencement, but the closing of another year provides a new opportunity to assess growth and move forward plans for an even better future.
I am excited for so many of our ongoing efforts in Student Affairs. I truly believe we are making an amazing difference for students at UGA. Our work has never been more important. In closing this year, let us reflect on how far we have come—and step boldly ahead for the students we are here to inspire for a long time to come.

Looking to Innovate
As I hope you gleaned from our recent Annual Update, there are numerous successes across Student Affairs in enriching student learning and supporting student development and growth at UGA. I am deeply proud of these accomplishments and the hard work of our talented staff they represent.
Along with these daily efforts, we are always looking for new and improved ways to impact the lives of our students. To assist in this, I am excited for the launch of our new Student Affairs Innovate Teams. Later this year, our Innovate Teams will bring together staff from across the division to work together in a concentrated setting on new initiatives to benefit students. These intensive collaborations promise to meld ideas, talents, and leadership from diverse areas to create new opportunities.
I encourage all of our staff to consider joining an Innovation Team—and to continue to look for those opportunities in your daily work—to inspire students anew and help to lead us forward.

Practicing Thankfulness
When was the last time you thought, “People are just too thankful?” Probably never.
In today’s culture we are often quick to acknowledge what we don’t have, what we need or want, or what others need to do. When it comes to expressing thanks for what we do have, or are given, we are far less effusive.
Working with students, we have great opportunities to inspire meaningful reflection that can lead to deeper appreciation. While there will always be areas to seek growth and change, there are also many reasons to give thanks every single day. May we help students—and each other—reflect and never forget the wonderful and much-needed art of practicing thankfulness.

Keep It Going
As you may have seen, UGA graduation and retention rates are now at all-time highs.
While there are many factors in these successes—beginning with our amazingly talented UGA students—Student Affairs plays a critical role. From living and learning communities in Housing, academic accommodations through DRC, health and wellness efforts in the Health Center, Rec Sports, and Student Care and Outreach (profiled this week on the UGA homepage), to learning, engagement, and community building efforts in so many other areas, our contributions are vital in helping students to flourish here.
It’s gratifying to see the entire UGA community so committed to student success. I am proud we are able to play an important part. Thanks, as always, for all that you do. Best wishes for a wonderful close to fall term and a restful winter break.

The Extra Step
Several years ago, a close friend of mine moved to the Philippines. Since then, we have always talked about how great it would be for me to visit. With the usual hectic pace of work and life and thousands of miles between, there was always a reason it never happened. This year would be different.
As you read this, I am enjoying the fabulous history, art, and culture on the Philippine isles, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Cambodia and Bangkok, Thailand. I finally made this trip happen, mostly because I believe in the power of the opportunities presented to us. When we have a chance to make a special opportunity happen, the time, effort, and resources required are infinitely worthwhile.
In our work with students at UGA, there are so many moments where those extra steps can make all the difference. As we begin this new year, I encourage us all to seek out those special opportunities—to help a student, improve a process, build a partnership, whatever the case may be—and make those opportunities come alive. The extra efforts we make for students elevate us all.
Best wishes for a wonderful 2016 and see you (back in Georgia) soon!

More to Love
Many of us associate this time of year with Valentine’s Day and connecting with the special people in our lives. For us in student affairs, we are doubly blessed—the loves in our lives extend even further. Just think of the love found in:
- That moment of authentic discovery, when the light in a student’s eyes goes on
- The feeling you get when a student says thanks—for being a mentor, for helping out, even in a small way
- Seeing a once-timid incoming student emerge years later—strong, self-assured and ready for the world
- Helping a student overcome an unexpected life challenge with resiliency and move forward anew
- Collaborating with colleagues, building something meaningful to benefit students
- Sharing in the great ideas of students and staff as they come alive on campus, changing our community for the better
- For us, in addition to our other loves, love includes making a difference in the lives of students and our UGA community. It’s why we’re here and what we’re called to do. To me, that kind of love is a season we can share not only on Valentine’s Day, but let it be a catalyst for us throughout the year.

Learning from Leaders
Recently, I attended a gathering of senior student affairs leaders from across the southeast. On this visit, hosted at Texas A&M University, we had the opportunity to tour the George (H.W.) Bush Presidential Library and Museum. As you see in the photo above, I got to make believe for a few minutes in a replica of the Oval Office. I have to admit: it was pretty fun. But it also got me thinking.
While we may not always agree with the viewpoints or approaches of leaders, it can be incredibly helpful to see our work from another perspective. Often we find many of the same challenges and opportunities in a new light.
We also need to remember that students look to us as leaders. They are attentive to our actions and perspectives—and use interactions with us to inform their own development. Put differently, if each of us had a museum for students to visit, what would they learn about us as leaders?
My biggest hope is for all of us to learn from leaders around us and model what we want others to learn from our efforts.

Awesome Times Two
Imagine preparing every day for an important presentation—only you never know when you will be asked to deliver it.
For the University Health Center, that presentation is the accreditation review process through the prestigious Joint Commission. Every 18 to 39 months, Joint Commission surveyors conduct an unannounced on-site visit to review all aspects of the Health Center’s services, facilities and operations. For the second consecutive review, the University Health Center received a flawless report of findings.
When you consider that only 17 out of nearly 1,800 college health centers nationwide (and no others in Georgia) choose to go through the challenging Joint Commission accrediting process, much less receive flawless findings twice in a row, we have much to appreciate.
What this accomplishment means most is that UGA students, faculty and staff served by the Health Center receive the highest quality health care every single day. That is a standard of excellence to which we can all aspire. Congratulations to the Health Center and all of our other amazing departments who continue to do stellar work with our students daily.

The Best of UGA
In the days following the heartbreaking recent car accident that claimed the lives of four UGA students, and left another hospitalized in critical condition, we have seen the best of the UGA community. Through this time of incredible pain and grief for so many, as before, unfortunately, when we have lost other students, we have come together as a UGA family in an outpouring of care and support across the campus, the state, the nation, on social media, at memorial services, at every turn.
While nothing we can say or do will ease the pain of a campus tragedy, our coming together says so very much. I am incredibly proud to be a part of the University of Georgia, and in trying times, I appreciate even more how many others feel the same. We grieve for these students, families, and friends as we support each other in strength. Most important, we are assured, as always, our Bulldog spirit will prevail.

Summer Thinking
One of the great things about summer is the opportunity to think back on the successes and challenges of the past year and look ahead to the year to come. As we move into summer, I have been doing a lot of thinking lately about how we can continue to build on our outstanding work in Student Affairs to improve student life at UGA.
As examples, some opportunities I have been considering are:
- How we best continuously ensure student safety
- Further ways we can help students develop more fully as leaders and engaged citizens
- Helping more students find balance and reduce stress and anxiety
- Strategies to help students become more resilient and overcome setbacks
- Means to ensure every student at UGA feels valued and supported for who they are
While these are complex endeavors, I challenge us all in the new academic year to work toward concrete ways we can work together to benefit students. We have amazing talent and resources in Student Affairs and at UGA. Our students deserve our best thinking. Now, let’s get busy and create some magic!

Food for Action
No UGA student should ever go hungry. That sounds like an easy pledge, but, unfortunately, it is not the reality for the hundreds of UGA students and other college students each year who struggle with hunger and food insecurity.
A couple of years ago, alumna Robin Hoover decided to do something about it. On a tour of the Tate Student Center, after seeing the student food pantry, Robin felt a special calling. Along with her husband, Wayne, she determined to make a gift to start a new program through Student Affairs to provide food scholarships to deserving students. That program, the Let All the Big Dawgs Eat Food Scholarship, started the next semester, awarding two campus meal plans.
As you will read in the feature below, I am proud to say that with the recent major gift from the R. Halsey Wise and Lisha S. Wise Family Foundation (see story below), along with other gifts and partnership with Food Services, we will offer campus meal plans to 34 needy students this fall. While there is still much more to do, like Robin, we are committed to eliminate hunger and food insecurity at UGA, one meal at a time. If you would like to join us and make a donation or learn more, I encourage you to do so.
May the vision and leadership of exceptional supporters like the Hoovers and the Wises remind us that we all have the power to see a need and make a difference for students in some essential and encouraging ways.

Butterflies
You might think, after more than 30 years working in higher education, and many others as a student, the feelings of anxiousness and wonder in starting a new school year would be long past. Yet every year at this time, I get the same bubbling-up energy about starting fresh, a new day, the promise and potential of this year’s journey in life—and in the lives of the students and community we serve.
Spending the summer meeting with incoming students and families has filled me once again with renewed excitement, hope, and joy for UGA. It has been a tumultuous summer for many across the nation and around the world. As we come together as a learning community this fall, we have much to contemplate and share, new understandings to make, new commonalities to find. I look forward to the growth, personal challenges, and awakenings in store for us all this year. May we join in the spirit of discovery, dialogue, and learning together for the betterment of our campus and, most important of all, our world.

Committed to the Cause
It should come as no surprise that I have tremendous belief in our work in Student Affairs and its power to support and transform the lives of students at UGA. Making a difference for students is why we are here. I could not be more enthusiastic and confident about our team and the ability to enhance the learning environment for UGA students.
In recent weeks we have had the incredible blessing, along with numerous other gifts, to receive two major commitments from unbelievable donors to our work in Student Affairs. These gifts have the opportunity to bring life-changing new resources for students, in critical ways. We are thrilled at the possibilities. While I expect to be able to share more with you about these remarkable gifts in the coming weeks, for now, know that we are definitely not alone. So many others share the belief in what we do, in the magic that can happen in the lives of our amazing students in their times at UGA and beyond. Turn, Turn, Turn
During this enduringly warm year in Athens, summer has seemed to last long into the fall. Only now has the crisp of autumn air begun to return to campus in turns, tinging the lucky leaf in Georgia red. Walking through campus, I am reminded of the beauty that can come through change, from transformation, letting go.
In our work with students—and within ourselves—there are times when we all need to let things go. Whether it is old habits, preconceptions of those around us, routines, battles fought, unhealthy relationships, an attitude, hurt, loss, whatever the case may be. Seasons change, and sometimes, we all need change too. In those moments of separation and re-centering, we discover our resilience, retune to who we are and the power and meaning in finding fulfillment in our lives.
This fall, may we help students and each other learn to let go, in order to grow.

The Holiday Things We Do
Around this time of year, many of us celebrate traditions and holidays with special significance in our lives. These are often moments to come together and share in common purpose with neighbors, family, and friends. In these traditions, we offer kindness and understanding, comfort those in need. We listen, nurture, give, and give thanks.
The question to me is why it takes a holiday to inspire goodwill. Growing up, my mother always reminded me, “It’s not the holiday things you do at holiday time, it’s the holiday things you do all year through.” I still take that to heart. Our students, families, communities, and world need our compassion and commitment to each other every single day. I challenge us all, as we move through the winter break into a new year, to make the spirit of holidays enduring: Engage genuinely and selflessly, seek understanding, continue to give and give thanks. To me, those holiday things are what we need for the entire year! Enjoy the season.

Planning Ahead
As many of you know, we are currently engaged in a strategic planning process for our Student Affairs division. These planning efforts are incredibly important, not only in affirming the future direction of our work, but also in engaging our division, partners, friends, students, and many others, in the ways we can all work together to continue to enhance the learning environment for UGA students.
This spring there will be additional opportunities for Student Affairs staff and students to share their perspectives and inform our planning process. Whether in a formal setting or simply by dropping an email, I encourage all staff and students to engage in this process and let us know how we can best shape our programs and services for the years to come.
Thank you all for your invaluable contributions toward the learning and success of UGA’s amazing students. Best wishes for a spectacular 2015!

Igniting Social Justice
I often describe our campus as a learning laboratory for life. We bring together learners of all backgrounds and identities to share, discover, and grow—and leave more prepared for leadership and stewardship of local and global communities.
A critical way we enhance the learning environment at UGA is to ensure that every member of our community has an equal opportunity to succeed and flourish. In our practice in student affairs, we join many others, including the Center for Social Justice, Human and Civil Rights in the UGA School of Social Work, in a shared commitment to social justice, on our campus and in our world.
Adams, Bell and Griffin (2007) defined “social justice” as both a process and a goal. “The goal of social justice education is full and equal participation of all groups in a society that is mutually shaped to meet their needs. Social justice includes a vision of society that is equitable and all members are physically and psychologically safe and secure.”
Putting this commitment into practice, nearly 60 students and a dozen staff members recently participated in the Ignite: UGA Social Justice Retreat. Together these students and staff explored the ideas of diversity, identity, power, privilege, and oppression, thus forging new dialogues and shared understandings. As you’ll learn directly from the retreat participants below, these kinds of dialogues provide exactly the transformative learning opportunities in which we want all learners to engage at UGA.
Pursuing a socially just society is not always an easy or comfortable journey. Many, even on our own campus, may not understand or agree with perspectives shared or challenges raised. As a learning laboratory, we must hear each other with mutual respect and continue to work together toward shaping a more equitable, safe, and secure campus and society.
In this spirit, I urge you all to join in dialogues, including many upcoming opportunities during Black History Month, to make our great campus, community, and world even better and more socially just.

New Website Helps Us to Tell Our Story
Recently we launched a new website for the Division of Student Affairs at studentaffairs.uga.edu.
As I have said many times, I believe it is critically important that we share the stories and successes of the ways we enhance the learning environment for students at UGA. We are truly excited for the many opportunities this fantastic new web presence offers in telling our story.
Over the coming months, we will be transitioning Student Affairs departments from across the division to the new look. I hope that you will take time to look through the new site and become even more engaged in the excitement surrounding student life at UGA.
I would like to thank and congratulate staff from across the division for their outstanding work on telling our story. Refreshing our web presence is an important step toward successfully sharing the achievements of UGA students and Student Affairs with the world.

Ignorance Never Wins
Over the past few weeks, we have faced a number of challenges related to crude, hateful and cowardly anonymous comments posted on social media, particularly the mobile app Yik Yak. While we always encourage students to give little credence to such anonymous posts, which may or may not be genuine, words can still hurt. Many of these posts contain offensive, abusive content, antithetical to our values as an inclusive, socially just learning community. It can be hard to read these posts and believe that a safe, secure and equitable campus for all is possible. Yet I believe it is, and I refuse to let the real or joking immaturity and hate of others to crack the foundation of my belief.
My strong feeling is that the best response to troubling speech is more speech, including the down vote. When we each take responsibility to speak out against bias and injustice and affirm our shared values as a community of scholars, we all benefit. Of course, we have work to do to ensure all members of our community feel valued and can flourish. Please know we share this cause at UGA together—and we will succeed. Ignorance will never win, and in the end, it never has.
Let those few who chirp in anonymity hear the resounding swell of our voices raised in solidarity. This is now and will be forever our best recourse to drown out hate.

2020—Here We Come!
As a Student Affairs division, we have spent the last year engaged in a comprehensive 2020 Strategic Planning Process. This effort has involved stakeholders across UGA, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, and donors—many of you.
A detailed planning process like this is critical to complete our work for and with students. It helps to shape our strategic direction, foster a stronger student affairs community, and ultimately enhance the learning environment for students at UGA. The conversations we have had this year have challenged us in important ways. As we move forward with our new strategic plan, I encourage us to continue to be bold, avoid complacency, and keep the best interests of students at the center of all that we do. We have failed if we do otherwise.
For us to realize our plans for the next five years and beyond, we each have a contribution to make. We must all find ways to focus our daily efforts even more fully on helping students succeed. We will be sharing much more about the plan and your role in the coming weeks. Thank you for your engagement in this vital work, and onward to 2020!

Building Tomorrow’s Leaders
I am excited to introduce a new partnership that will ultimately benefit students and aspiring student leaders across UGA.
UGA Student Affairs has joined with the renowned Accelerated Leadership Group (ALG) to launch the UGA Academy for Leadership Excellence. This initiative will enable UGA students and other leaders from all fields the opportunity to develop and hone world-class leadership skills, through the latest practice and research, preparing emerging leaders for future growth in their studies and careers.
For UGA students, the Academy will be part of the Center for Leadership and Service, which empowers students to intentionally engage in leadership learning and practice active citizenship. The Academy will also offer cutting-edge leadership training programs for emerging and front line leaders in business and industry, hosted at UGA.
Preparing students for leadership of local and global communities is one of our highest priorities. This innovative partnership promises some of the best leadership expertise and education to benefit UGA students. Learn more at www.ALGleaders.com/UGA.

Renewal
At UGA, we are committed to help every student succeed and flourish, providing the best programs, services, and facilities possible. While we are proud of the resources that we are currently able to provide for students, we are always working to improve. It is this process of renewal, of continually looking to make our efforts new, fresh, and stronger still, which we hope makes the difference for students and allows them to reach their fullest potential.
Over the past year, we have undertaken a few initiatives across campus, from upgrading facilities in Housing, Memorial Hall, and the Ramsey Center, to implementing our new strategic plan and the Pillars of Student Success, which will help us enhance the learning environment for students.
Each of us, too, has an opportunity for renewal. As we move into the new academic year, I encourage us all to find opportunities to renew—to learn, share, practice, give, and improve ourselves and our work together to benefit students at UGA. They expect no less of us!

Celebrate!
As I begin my third year as vice president at UGA, we have much to celebrate.
Later this month UGA will welcome its most academically talented class of students ever. In wide numbers, UGA students report they are happy and fulfilled through their experiences at UGA. Students have more opportunities, in better facilities and through stronger programs, than ever before. Student graduation rates are at record highs. More than 90 percent of undergraduate seniors say that if they had to choose a college again, they would pick UGA.
These are all outstanding measures, and we should be proud of these accomplishments, but we know we can do even better. That’s why, over the past year, Student Affairs developed and launched a new five-year strategic plan, an ambitious course to further enhance the learning environment for UGA students.
Toward this plan we have forged new strategic partnerships, implemented a new student learning framework, promoted inclusion and equity, upgraded facilities, made new connections with alumni and community partners, and launched new websites and communications tools to promote our impact broadly.
While we rightfully celebrate our accomplishments over the past year, let us also commit to extend and advance our efforts on behalf of students, families, alumni, and other UGA community members in the year ahead. They deserve no less.
Thank you all so much for your extraordinary commitment to UGA and our amazing students. Together we are creating magic! Today and every day we have a long list of reasons to celebrate!

More to Learn
The education we provide students at UGA extends from the classroom to the world, from today to the rest of their lives. This emphasis on continuous learning and engagement is one that we should all embody.
Each year, Student Affairs hosts a Professional Enrichment Conference, bringing together staff, faculty, and students from across UGA and other colleges and universities. This event offers a wonderful daylong learning and networking experience to promote professional and personal development. In addition to nearly 40 learning sessions, this year we are thrilled to have Dr. Susan Komives, a renowned scholar, author, and student affairs practitioner, join us as keynote speaker. If you have not already, I encourage you to register and attend.
These special opportunities to extend learning and enhance our work with students remind that, for all of us, there is always more to learn.

Right Next to Us
We recently hosted a retreat with the Student Affairs Leadership Team, which includes directors from all 19 Student Affairs departments, along with our central administrative team. It is always great when we take some extended time together to reflect, share updates from our work across campus, and engage new ways we can help students to learn and flourish here at UGA.
As we talked together, I was reminded once again of the amazing resources we have in Student Affairs. So often, our greatest opportunities for learning and growth come through interacting with those directly around us. Our wonderful staff and incredible students offer endless chances for dialogue and insight. I encourage us all to value fully the people right next to us. As my grandmother used to say, “Sometimes when you are looking in one direction, if you turn around, your blessing is probably right next to you!”
The more we are open to each other, the more welcoming and connected our UGA community becomes.

#CountMeInUGA
By now I hope you have heard about Count Me In, the first-ever campus climate survey at UGA, which is going on right now. Through the Count Me In survey, every member of our community—faculty, staff, and students—is invited to share perspectives about learning, living, and working at UGA.
Sometimes people see a survey like this and assume that it is for others—for those with issues to address or experiences of a certain type. The reality is that Count Me In is truly for everyone. To have a full picture of our community, we need to hear from all members of our community. We need you to share what’s working, what we’re doing well, as well as what we can do better to support you and others like you. At UGA everyone has an important voice, and it’s up to you to make sure your voice is heard.
Creating the kind of supportive, welcoming community we want at UGA is an ongoing process. Efforts like the Count Me In survey help us better understand our successes and challenges and move together toward a better future. Between now and November 20, I urge you to say, “Count Me In!” Thanks for taking the time to complete this.

We’re All We Have
With the end of fall term and winter holidays approaching, I ask us all to be mindful that these can be stressful times for many students and families. We sometimes take for granted the effort and emotional investment involved in a student’s life. The pressures of exams, final projects, work, family commitments, financial hardships, travel, and for some, graduating and beginning a career can all be challenging for students.
As staff, friends, and peers this holiday season, let us look out for each other and offer our support and encouragement. If you or someone you know needs special help, we have outstanding resources at UGA, from counseling to wellness to student support. Always feel free to reach out or refer those in need. More information on available resources can be found at studentaffairs.uga.edu.
One of the most wonderful things about UGA is how much we all care about our community. In that spirit, may we share our joy and care with those around us. After all, we’re all we have.
Best of luck for the remainder of the academic term and have a blessed holiday season.

Happy 2014!
It is wonderful to begin another year at the University of Georgia! There is a special magic about this University, and I am incredibly honored by the opportunity to lead and contribute to a place and community that mean so much to all of us.
It has been an exciting and inspiring few months as I have begun my new role as Vice President for Student Affairs. As has been affirmed for me many times, we have amazingly talented students and staff and extraordinary opportunities in UGA Student Affairs.
One of those opportunities that I continue to push forward is to share our story. This Enewsletter is one of a number of ways that we will be highlighting student successes and our efforts across the division and the campus to make our great university even better. I am truly thankful for each of you and the innumerable contributions you make daily, both seen and unseen, that help to make UGA a dynamic and welcoming learning environment that enables our students to flourish.
May 2014 find you, your family and all those you cherish safe and enjoying what life has to offer. I look forward to our efforts in the coming year to share our story and enhance UGA together.

It's a Miracle, Georgia
At UGA, we are incredibly blessed to have such truly remarkable students, who are making a tremendous impact on our campus and in our community in so many areas.
I recently had the opportunity to share with students the finale of Dance Marathon, the annual fundraising event for the student-run philanthropy, UGA Miracle. I can only describe the atmosphere with hundreds of neon-clad students and guests cheering and celebrating their accomplishments together as awe-inspiring.
To hear the stories of the families at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta helped by UGA Miracle and to see this year’s fundraising total continue to climb and climb to record heights—more than a half million dollars in all—I found my eyes filled with tears of pride. It was an unbelievable moment for those students who had worked so hard throughout the year and for those children whose lives will be changed by the dollars raised. It was also a great moment for the University of Georgia.
While it is only one example of countless efforts our students bring forth each day, that bright Sunday hour of “Miracle” reminded me again of the beauty and power and possibility our students bring to every opportunity for interaction. In Student Affairs, we are so fortunate to experience so very much as well as serve.

Leading the Way
Along with green leaves returning to campus trees, spring at UGA also brings celebration and commemoration.
Many student groups, including the Student Government Association, elect new leaders and members for the upcoming year. We take time to honor exceptional students across campus, including outstanding student leaders, student employees, honor society members and others who have had a tremendous impact across campus life. Soon we will be presenting our spring graduates at Commencement.
As I enjoy these events with these amazing students, I am continually reminded of the importance of these moments of recognition and celebration, both grand and small. Through these milestones, we confirm the incredible achievements of our students and affirm our shared commitment with them to leadership and stewardship of our local and global communities.
I tell students regularly, regardless of their chosen field of study or part of the world to which they move, as UGA students and graduates, much will be expected from them, and there are endless opportunities to contribute and to lead.

Peer to Peer
The University of Georgia boasts one of the first student-run judiciaries in American higher education. University Judiciary, a student-run organization advised by the Office of Student Conduct, guides students through UGA’s student conduct process and administers formal hearings for students charged with violating the university’s Code of Conduct.
Recently I had the pleasure to join a fantastic new group of student advocates, advisors and justices at the Jenny Penney Oliver University Judiciary Recognition and Induction Ceremony. Jenny Penney Oliver was a dear friend of mine and former student affairs staff member who passed away last year. I am proud that we have been able to honor her memory with the naming of this ceremony and for the amazing students represented. She would have loved it.
The Code of Conduct sets a high standard for all UGA students to act in a manner that demonstrates integrity and respect for others and the campus environment. We can all be gratified that such dedicated fellow students help to ensure their peers meet those expectations.

A Year to Remember
As I reflect on my first academic year as vice president at UGA, what an amazing year!
I have always said that UGA has the best students in the world, but returning this year, I have had the chance to witness this anew. My interactions with the incredibly talented and accomplished students at UGA at times took my breath away. UGA students continue to astound and lead in every field. We are overwhelmingly blessed!
While we had our share of challenges as a campus this year, our gifted Student Affairs staff helped us overcome these hurdles. I believe that we have grown stronger this year as a university community and as a Student Affairs division. I am grateful to have such fabulous colleagues and partners dedicated to enhance the learning environment for students at UGA.
As I have taken part in commmencement ceremonies, including the Rite of Sankofa and Lavender Graduation, over the past few weeks, I have enjoyed countless stories of the successes of students and the impact of Student Affairs. These are the stories that make any year memorable. Today I am confident that UGA graduates are leaving fully prepared to go out into the world’s communities to make a difference.
That makes me exceptionally proud to be back at UGA.

New Again, Again
I recently had the chance to serve as faculty for the New Professionals Institute (NPI), a weeklong professional development opportunity for new student affairs professionals across the south.
Along with colleagues from other institutions, including Emory, the University of Florida, the University of Tennessee, Texas A&M, and others, I spent an intensive few days sharing with and learning from a group of more than 70 new student affairs professionals, including two of our UGA staff members. I was continually amazed by the talent and passion these outstanding new professionals have for engaging and supporting students. It was invigorating for me to share in their energy, ideas, and sense of purpose.
As we talked together on the final night, I reflected on my own, now 30-year journey from new professional to vice president at UGA. What stood out for me was how the feeling of helping students to learn, develop, and flourish through campus life has remained exactly the same through the years. In the eyes of these new professionals, I was reminded once again that with students as the center of our work, every day is an opportunity to share—and experience—amazing growth.

A Milestone
I have always believed in milestones. I think it’s important to acknowledge those special occasions in our lives, whether a graduation, holiday, birthday, anniversary, or other notable event.
August marks my first anniversary as vice president at UGA. As I have shared before, it has been a remarkable year in so many ways. I am exceptionally proud of our work in Student Affairs and incredibly excited for the opportunities we have ahead to enhance the learning environment for students at UGA.
Recently I shared with our Student Affairs division some highlights from this year that you may appreciate. I am grateful for the amazing work of our talented, dedicated Student Affairs team, which has made these accomplishments possible. I’m so very grateful to work with them daily.
Together with students, we are working to make new milestones every day.

In Full Motion
What an amazingly fun and busy start to the new academic year we have had. From a fantastic Hunker Down with Housing, where we moved in more than 8,000 students to the residence halls, to welcoming events across Student Affairs, UGA is truly alive with student activity.
It is always special to watch Athens and the UGA campus burst to life with the return of fall classes and student happenings.
As you will read in our Student Affairs Annual Report below, all of this activity includes some spectacular efforts by our Student Affairs team over the last year to enhance the learning environment for students. I am proud of these accomplishments and all the great staff members who brought them to fruition. Thus, I am thrilled to share them with you.
It is an incredibly exciting time to be at UGA and in Student Affairs. Welcome back students, and onward to an amazing and even better school year!

Coming Home
As you have probably noticed, Homecoming weekend at UGA is much earlier than usual this year. I always enjoy the weeklong festivities, including the carnival on Legion Field and crowning of the King and Queen at the Saturday game. I am looking forward to our time together with alumni and friends as we celebrate another fabulous Homecoming week.
I always tell our staff that part of our goal on campus and in the residence halls is to help students feel at home. I strongly believe that we all need to feel comfortable in our homes, and UGA is a home for our students. Students who feel comfortable and supported in our learning environment will be more engaged and can achieve at their highest potential. We all play an important role in creating a welcoming community. When we each do our part and remember the importance of “home” in our life, homecoming is something that happens for our students every day.

For School and Country
At UGA, we are blessed to count more than 240 veterans and active duty service members among our student population. These diverse students are enrolled across UGA’s schools and colleges, bringing a wealth of global experience and leadership to our campus.
During this month, which aptly includes Veterans Day, we will honor these students in a number of important ways. We will spotlight student veterans on the Art Wall in the Tate Student Center. We will host Military Appreciation Day at the UGA football game with Charleston Southern. Finally, thanks to the generous support of the First Data Corporation, we will dedicate a new Student Veterans Lounge in the Tate Center, as a welcoming, multi-purpose space for these and other students to gather.
As a UGA family, we are exceptionally proud of these outstanding students and their ongoing commitment here and around the world.

The Epistle
Each holiday season, for as long as I can remember, I have taken occasion to write a shared letter to our closest family friends: The Wilson Holiday Epistle. It is an update on what happened over the year, the triumphs and challenges, pictures and stories, which made life for me, along with my son, Hunter, memorable over that time. Every year, I end the letter with a personal goal for the upcoming year.
In this edition of the newsletter and similar to our epistle, I am relating the goal of CONNECTION. As I think about this year and our work across Student Affairs at UGA, I see so many stronger connections happening. With students. With each other. With those in our campus and local communities. When we are connected, we can have a transformative impact on the learning environment at UGA—and in the lives of our amazing students.
As we embark on this holiday season, let us strive to be present and truly connect. Always remember, as Benjamin Disraeli said, “The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches, but to reveal to him his own.”
Be well and enjoy the season!
