This page contains each of Vice President Wilson’s monthly messages dating back to the initial Student Affairs Enewsletter sent in February 2014. Enjoy!
Last week I attended the funeral services for UGA’s first Vice President for Student Affairs, Dwight Oliver Douglas. Dr. Douglas was the VP when I was a student at UGA, and I later served alongside him as a staff member here for many years.
As a model and mentor, Dwight was someone who taught me so much, even when I didn’t always realize it. From our interactions and watching his work, I learned about empowering people, treating everyone fairly, listening more than talking, and the great value of patience. Looking back, he may not even have realized how much I and others drew from his leadership, his “pouring out vessels of knowledge.”
In our work on campus, we, too, should remember that students and others learn from us, even when we least expect it. In turn, we will learn some of our most valuable lessons without seeking to do so. I’m proud to know Dwight’s lessons will live on through me and so many others for years to come.
