FAQ for Online Writing Consulting Appointments
What is a Writing Consultation?
During a 45 minute writing consultation session, the consultant and client discuss a writing sample, usually a writing assignment. Frequently, a client wants help with a specific writing element like the thesis or commas. However, sometimes, a client just wants somebody to look over the writing. Consultants know how to help both types of clients.
What is a writing consultant?
The UGA Writing Center is staffed by experienced English Instructors and Ph. D. students.
Who is my consultant?
The writing consultants for the Gwinnett Campus project are Maria Chappell and Beth Kozinsky. Both hold an M.A. from UGA, and both have taught and consulted on the university level for several years.
What do I need for the appointment?
You need a file of your document—either in Microsoft Word or Open Office, format—a computer with internet and a webcam, and your campus’s Skype account login information. (See below.)
When is the consultant available?
The consultants will be available for eight scheduled appointments weekly:
- Maria—from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Mondays and Tuesdays from January 23, 2012 until the last day of spring classes, April 30, 2012.
- Beth— from 7:00 - 9:00 PM on Wednesday and Thursday
How can I schedule an appointment?
Send an email to: ugawritingcenter@gmail.com and request an appointment during one of the times listed above.
Appointment requests will be filled if the desired time is available and if the request contains the following information:
Your Name
Your External Campus (Griffin or Gwinnett)
Day, Date, and Time of Requested Appointment (Ex: Thursday, January 19, 2012, 6:00 PM)
Name and Number of Course associated with this writing project (Ex: Digital Rhetoric, ENGL4870)
Professor associated with this writing project (Ex: Dr. Jane Smith)
Describe two concerns that you have about this project (Ex: main point, introduction, conclusion, grammar/punctuation, etc.)
Requests made on weekdays will receive a response within 24 hours.
What is the Gwinnett Campus Skype account login information?
Login Name: gwinnettconsultant (no spaces)
Password: writing1(no spaces)
Can the UGA Writing Center proofread or edit my work?
As an instructional service unit, the Center's consultants will not do this work for you; however, we will help you learn to identify and revise your own work.
