Ambassadors

Opportunities for student development continue to grow at the UGA Griffin Campus.  In February 2009, a new student organization was formed - UGA Griffin Ambassadors.  The Ambassadors provide service to the University of Georgia Griffin Campus by functioning as the official hosts and goodwill ambassadors at campus and community events.  They seek to serve the Griffin Campus at all functions where it is desired to have students welcome guests and visitors.  They also work to recruit new students to the campus and promote the University of Georgia as a great place to work and study.

This year’s Griffin Ambassadors are:

Front row left to right:  Marcus Jones, Chris Benton, Trent Tate (Chair), and Stephen Bowman (Vice Chair).

Second row left to right:  Stephanie Thayer (Secretary), Jennifer Hidalgo (Event Coordinator), Lea Tremblay, and Dr. Jen Williams (Advisor).  Not pictured is Megan McClure.

Griffin Campus celebrates Earth Day at Stepping Stones

earth day

Two Griffin Campus students, Chris Benton (kneeling, black shirt) and Matt Aderhold (kneeling, red shirt), took part in the Earth Day Celebration at Stepping Stones Educational Therapy Center on Wednesday, April 22.  Both students are Environmental Resource Science majors in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.  The Stepping Stones students, ages 6 – 14, listened to discussions on pollution, global warming, composting, and recycling and water conservation.  One demonstration involved asking the children who turned the water off while brushing their teeth and the first student that said they did received a brand new toothbrush.  The children were presented with Earth Day activity books and UGA Griffin Campus pencils and stickers.

UGA Griffin Team Takes 1st Place in the United Way’s Cardboard Boat Race!

Click here for the Boat Race video

A team of Griffin staff and students entered the 1st Annual “What Floats Your Boat” Cardboard Boat Race sponsored by the United Way of Griffin-Spalding County and outraced ten other teams to win the trophy at this fun-filled and often entertaining event.  All boats were built to specific requirements and had to be occupied on the lake by one male and one female. That’s right; the boats were made out of cardboard and large enough to hold two adults!  The occupants of the Griffin boat were Dow Redding, an Environmental Resource Science student, and Katelyn Powers, a part time lab helper in the Entomology Department.  The rowers were assisted by Brittany Massey, a General Business student, and Patrick Standley, and Environmental Resource Science student. Rounding out the team were the creators of the boat, employees Jim Quick and Charles “Stroker” Gunter.   The boat, named the USS Bulldog, was aerodynamically designed to speed and endurance.

UGA Griffin Open House
and Tailgate Party Deemed a Success

Griffin TailGate

Saturday September 13th was a busy day for the UGA Griffin Campus.  After winning the cardboard boat race at Dundee Lake in the morning, participants and supporters raced back to campus to host the Open House for prospective students at noon.  Following the Open House, the campus hosted its first ever Tailgate party for students, faculty, staff and community supporters.  The UGA vs. U of South Carolina game was televised in two locations: in the Stuckey auditorium via satellite feed through the projector system (for those who wanted air conditioning), and at the outdoor Pavilion on a special designed truck that was turned into a 16 foot by 7 foot screen!  The view was perfect, the weather was great, the food was fabulous, and the Bulldogs won!

Featured Students: Justin and Kristen Merrick

Habitat for Humanity teamwork!

At first glance every thinks they are seeing double—and that is because they are!  UGA Griffin students Justin and Kristen Merrick are identical twins (don’t let the names fool you, both are females and truly identical!) pursuing a B.S.A. degree in Biological Science.  In addition to their heavy class loads, they orchestrated the first Habitat for Humanity Day on April 12th.  They coordinated the event with the local Habitat chapter, determined supplies needed, created publicity, secured volunteers, arranged for food, and worked really hard all day with an assortment of tools.  By the end of the day an old, dilapidated porch had been reconstructed into a beautiful front porch and entrance.  Afterwards they recorded the entire experience in a journal so future leaders will have a guide book.
